pr ET RENEE TEETER SOE Sea A Huronia District Hospital doctor resigned his position as vice- president of medical staff last week in support of the protest against the provin- cial government. Doctor Douglas Donald, who's been at the hospital for eight years, resigned last Monday because, "I'm sick and tired of having to make excuses for our health care system." Donald says the govern- ment's position regarding extra-billing has nothing to do with accessibility because no doctors in the area extra-bill. 'Bill 94 will do nothing for our local community except deny the right of patients and physicians to deal with one another on a professional basis at arms length from the government," he says "T also fear that it (the Bill) is the leading edge of future inaccessibility to physicians' services through further govern- ment restriction and in- tervention." According to Donald, pa- tients are teated as to whether they are cost effi- cient or not by the govern- ment. And unless there are guarantees for patients and doctors rights, the health care system will become another government bureaucracy. r Donald says he supports the Ontario Medical Association's (OMA) posi- tion against Bill 94, the Health Care Accessiblity Act which was passed last Friday. The OMA says it will appeal the Bill saying it is against the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. OMA President Dr. Richard Railton says the bill infringes on doctors rights to practice freely whereever and whenever they want. He adds that more hospitals will par- ticipate in emergency ward closures and more doctors will resign. Premier David Peterson, in.an answer to the OMA's fears says doctors are guaranteed the right to have as many patients as they want and can practice where they want. He adds, he's willing to meet with OMA representatives to iron out a solution and put an end to the strike, now in its 13th day. Hospital administrators say they will not close and will operate as best they can with emergency staff. Donald says the govern- ment is operating with a double standard because when there are budget cut- backs, hospitals get less. As a consequence, beds are closed and hospitals have less services. But when doctors are closing wards to protest a lack of money and govern- ment intervention, it's a different story he says. "Tt won't happen right now," he says, "'but in- cidiously over the years, the health care system will deteriorate because of government intervention like it did with the British system." 9.9 FINANCING STONELEIGH WV" Turaltions pcre Mase TIME IS RUNNING 7.8% ° FINANCING STONELEIGH *e qualted purcnas: 9.9 TRUCKS e $15 PICK-UPS (2 or 4 wheel drive) e FULL SIZE VANS = sl (ii * 9.9% based on 36 months to qualified cr purchasers or 48 months at 1 0 & *(Except Fiero GT & FINANCING 1986 Pontiac Fiero % FINANCING ALSO AVAILABLE ON BUICK e REGAL FIRE BIRD BONNEVILLE GRAND PRIX 6000 (4 cyl. only) FINANCING Hwy. 93 OFFER ENDS JUNE 30/86 GREAT e SKY HAWK (4 cyl. only) e CENTURY (4 cyl. only) PONTIAC eo .s protection warranty ..cadians & Fieras DEALS ON WHEELS MIDLAND TONELEIG 526-3724 Pontiac Buick Cadillac Tuesday, June 24, 1986, Page 5
