Association grants under fire The giving of $269,000 to the French Canadian Association of Ontario has been criticised by Simcoe East MPP Al McLean. McLean says the Liberal government is giving a special $100,000 grant to help the Association start a fund raising campaign. The rest of the money will be used by the Association to buy and renovate a building. McLean says he is representing his consti- tuents. More than 90 per cent of Simcoe East residents who responded to a recent question in a McLean newsletter said no to expanded bilingualism in Simcoe East. After the relocation of offices, con- struction of the 1,000 "That is the voice of the people of this riding and nothing personal on my behalf. In a democracy, the majority rules, in Simcoe East, the majority spoke out in a loud, clear voice." The MPP said that such a sum of money could be spent on more important needs. '"'As you know I wish our Franco-Ontario friends well in their cultural endeavours. Premier David Peterson has promised to make On- tario officially bilingual by 1990 and I am afraid this is a $100,000 step in this direction. It would appear a bit on the extravagant side to give any. group $100,000 just to undertake square foot store began ear- ly in March. I know of many organiza- tions that would very quickly convert such a grant into instant help for the community, the needy in the community. In the face of urgent need for hospital facilities and in some areas, the food bank situation, I would urge the government to consider the priorities." McLean called the government's decision a genuine case of priorities gone awry. "Granted, this group has made rich cultural contributions to our province but the need for such an infusion of funds must surely not precede our need for in- creased health facilities." The French Canadian Association of Ontario "'is care dedicated to the preserva- § tion and development of Franco-Ontarion culture and language, works to enhance the community's § visibility and profile. Its ef- forts cover such areas of Ontario life as labour, com- munications, health, social services and sports as well as educational, legal and constitutional matters. I would be very distressed to learn that anyone suffered in this province for a lack ™ of any of these services... in the language of the majori- ty," McLean concluded. Sainte-Marie ceeds from the sale of these goods will go toward sup- porting educational pro- grams at Sainte-Marie. According to Shirley Whittington, public rela- tions officer, the delays and setbacks of the con- struction on the store did not affect the expected completion date. Jim Lynn Funeral Director ARE FLOWERS STILL APPROPRIATE FOR A FUNERAL? A remembrance of flowers express the spirit of the heart often so hard to put into words. Flowers convey a respect to the departed and an ex- pression of caring to the bereaved. During the time of deep sorrow, flowers become the visible expression of sympathy and love, adding a background of warmth and beauty to the funeral setting. Flowers, like the divine words of scripture, speak of life and love which are eternal. They soften the sad pic- ture of death and add their fragrance and beauty to cheer the bereaved. Though fleeting in physical life, the beauty of flowers live on in memory and are often considered a symbol of eternity. When ordering flowers, be specific about the type you want and the expense. It is an added courtesy to re- quest that your full name and address be written on the back of the presentation card to help the bereav- ed when the acknowledgement cards are sent to you. Games H. "'We want the store to be an extension of the ex- perience visitors have on the 'site and in the museum." In the short time that the store has been open, it has enjoyed a warm response, according to Lucas. Images, operated by the friends of Sainte-Marie, is staffed by Solange Odesse and Charlie George.
