Movie Review Violets Are Blue a summer 'weepie' by Clive Denton Sad love stories are not as easy to bring off as they might seem. Even the pro- ducers of the very suc- cessful Love Story, weren't able to repeat the formula in Oliver's Story, a follow- up to their original romantic tragedy. Just a couple of years ago, Meryl Streep provoked no response from audiences while Falling In Love (the title of the film) with Robert de Niro. Now, along comes Violets Are Blue, a summer time "'weepie", in which Sissy Spacek and Kevin Kline try their luck at the genre. They play a couple who had a romantic fling some years ago. Now, Sissy returns to her home town and finds that Kevin is still there. But things have changed. He's married, with a teenage son. She's still interested - bad girl, Sissy, but older and wiser. In fact, she's become quite a famous Ebenezer II Club news | by Michelle Jones The second meeting of the Ebenezer 11 4H Gardening Club was held May 5, at the home of Linda Marchant. We decided on our name, which will be Ebenezer 11 Profitable Picklers. We then read the material in our books on fertilizers and how to plant your garden. We were then treated to a tour of Huronia Nurseries where Mr. and Mrs. Leonard took us through the greenhouse and talked to us about fer- tilizers. The next meeting will be on June 16, photo journalist. (If there were as many such women in real life as there are in vaguely feminist movies, the profession would be very overcrowded!). I must admit to remaining dry-eyed through Violets Are Blue. The situation is under developed and the characters not very in- terested. When they meet again, after years of ap- parently pining for each other, their greeting is on the lines of "Hi, how you do- ing?". My memory hasn't got that quite right, no doubt, but I'm sure the ac- tual words weren't much more inspired. Kevin Kline and Sissy Spacek, being good actors, fill their shadowy roles as best they can. And I liked Y os ay Penetanguishene wedding On March 15, 1986, in All Saints Anglican Church, Penetanguishene, Anna Robitaille wed Larry Beach of Penetanguishene. Rev. Joan Waters officiated. The reception was held in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 68. Bonnie Bedelia, as Kevin's wife, whose abiding love doesn't stop her from being "ticked off' with him. But the direction by Jack Fisk (who is married to Spacek, by the way), doesn't help any more than the script. There is a way to enjoy Violets Are Blue, however. That is to decide to enjoy it, beforehand. I'm grateful to a young lady in the au- dience, for a line I could never have invented. Drying her eyes after the movie, she explained to her friend that she started to cry even in the trailers, before it started. It's still not clear to me why the film is called Violets Are Blue but I do know that for me the violets wilted, somewhere around the middle. Experience a new kind of comfort in footwear!
