Site Feat ea ee ee ee ee Hogg River Next Project: at one time Hogg River played host to spring run rainbow trout. In fact, talk to an oldtimer and they'll even mention some good catches of speckled trout. Over the years, once again, a river has fallen prey to deterioration. Silting, beaver dams and other ob- structions have turned the Hogg into little more than a running ditch. Huronia Chapter of Trout Unlimited is hoping to return this cold water river into a heaven for speckies and rainbow trout. Previous projects on the south end of the North River have shown great success with rainbows, browns and speckies using their man made spawning beds and natural snawnine beds cleaned and raked by their organization. Projects such as these require man power. Trout Unlimited is asking anyone O utd Oors with Bryan Berriault interested in cleaning up the Hogg River to attend their meeting on March 25. Meeting will be held at the Wye Marsh at 7:30 p.m. There will be a charge of $1 to cover the cost of the hall. A special invitation has been sent out to land owners on the Hogg River. TU will inform those present what work has to be done and set out a plan for work days. With enough help the Hogg River could once again home a good run of rainbow trout and speckies. For those following the trail of Huronia's wild turkey, the big bird has landed. Presently, thrity-five wild turkeys have been released in south Huronia District. So far, according to John Dobell, MNR Midhurst, all birds are doing fine. Over winter months they followed deer trails picking up left overs from feeding deer. During winter months two birds carrying radio collars were closely monitored. Even with transmitters sightings were rare. With breeding season coming up MNR expects to add to its flock. For perch fishermen the Fifth Annual Orillia Perch Festival begins on April 14 through May 4. Prize structure has been changed somewhat this year giving more chances for fishermen to pick up some easy cash while in the derby. Fifty perch with $1,000 riding on their backs will be released. There will also be prizes for the largest perch over the entire derby as well as daily prizes to be drawn. For further infromation contact the Orillia & District Chamber of Com- merce, 11 Commerce Dr., Orillia, Ontario, L3V 6H3. Many people are now starting to think 'BASEBALL.' However, during the cold winter months the MMBA executive has been hard at work discussing ways and means of improving minor ball in the Midland area and several decisions have been made which should lead to a great 1986 season. There will be a major push to develop a strong houseleague system which in future years should provide a good source of Allstar players. In an effort to provide proper training, two preseason clinics will be offered - one for coaches and one for players - headed up by ex-major leaguer, Gord Dyment. Gord spent many years in the pro leagues and will be offering his knowledge and expertise to coaches and players not only at the clinics, but also throughout the year. Other important changes this year will be the addition of a permanent T-ball Allstar Team which will play out-of-town T-Ball Allstars throughout the season rather than once a year as done previously. If registration warrant, the major houseleague will be expanded to form a separate 15 / 16 year old division. The number of Allstar Teams will be dependent on the interest shown. Players and parents of potential allstars will be asked to make a firm commitment for the season prior to MMBA investing time and money in Allstar teams, particularly in the Ban- tam / Midget divisions. There will be a minimal increase in registration / sponsorship fees this season in order to help combat the increasing cost of running the league. Registrations will be held in front of Duquette's Home Electronic Centre at Mountainview Mall on Saturday April 5, and 12 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you would like more information, please contact Ken Greenwood at 526-4831 or Karen Wright at 526-5379."
