Tia aa Job creation programs Dear Editor: As you are probably aware, the Progressive Conservative government has spent a great deal of time considering carefully the serious problem of unemployment in this country. The main focus of our administration has been to create jobs for these people. Our job creation program has been a great success to date. Since the election, 580,000 new jobs have been created, including 129,000 in January alone. The unemployment rate has fallen from 11.7 percent in September 1984 to 9.8 percent in January 1986, its lowest level since April 1982. The youth unemployment rate has fallen from 18.4 percent to 15.9 percent. But our pursuit for jobs does not stop here. As the Member of Parliament for Simcoe North, I am writing to you today to advise you of more job opportunities that exist. Census Day is June 3, 1986. Nearly 45,000 temporary jobs will be involved in carrying out the Census. Of these, Statistics Canada will seek to hire 25,000 students / youth to fill the positions. The Census will provide detailed statistical data for use in the development of labour markets, job creation and income support policies. It will also provide data on education, language knowledge and use, aboriginal people and the disabled population. If you are interested in working on the Census, you should register with the nearest Canada Employment Centre before mid-March. Census representatives must possess:a willingness to work evenings and weekends, have a valid Driver's Licence, and be 18 years of age or older. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact either my Orillia office (325- 1306) or Midland office (526-4784). Good Luck! Yours truly, -Doug Lewis, M.P. Simcoe North Thanks for the compliment Dear Editor: Just a note to thank you for your "Com- plimentary"' editorial. It was so thoughtful of you and I really do ap- preciate your writing this. This is part of the Senior Citizens' Month celebrations to be held in June. "Tt is important that we recognize and honour the many contributions which seniors continue to make to their communities and our society," said Mr. Van Horne. Nominations for the Senior Achievement Awards may be made by the public as well as community organizations wishing to recognize individuals in their area. Nominees must be senior citizens, residents of the Province of Ontario, and have achieved significant goals: and made an outstanding contribution to the citizens of the province during their retirement years. A Selection Committee will choose up to twenty seniors who will receive the award. "While we cannot single out all of the thousands of seniors in Ontario who give freely of themselves to others, we want to highlight through these awards some of the significant contributions from which we all benefit," said Mr. Van Horne. People wishing to nominate a senior citizen in their area may contact the Ontario Seniors Secretariat, 700 Bay Street, 3rd Floor, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1Z6 or call (416) 965-5106 to obtain an application form. Deadline for making nominations is April 30, 1986. SPECI -Patricia Jensen Information Officer --~ ZD# Sa & his Friends We're so close to Spring 1986 The first day of Spring is just two days away! For astronomers, March 20, 1986 is important as the vernal equinox: the date when the duration of day and night are almost exactly equal. The next big date on their celestial calendar is the summer solstice, June 21, some 94 days later, when we will enjoy the longest day of the year. Join battle against cancer reader urge Dear Editor: Springtime, hope, and the good work of the Canadian Cancer Society are all symbolized in the daffodil. Daffodil Day is April 4th. Very soon, volunteers from the Canadian Cancer Society will be contacting your readers at their work places, offering opportunities to place orders for daffodils. Two dollars and fifty cents buys a bunch of ten blooms. I encourage your readers to join in the con- tinuing battle against Cancer by supporting Daffodil Day and the April Canadian Cancer Society fund raising campaign. Spring and daffodils symbolize hope. Every bunch of daffodils your readers purchase brings the hope of victory over cancer that much closer. Sincerely, -Des Carpenter Midland L CHIL Cottage patrols Touch wood: Midland OPP have not probed a highway accident since last Thursday, reports OPP Const. Roy Tyo, community services officer assigned to the local detachment. Meanwhile,: ar OPP helicopter flying out of Brampton has been in the area during the past couple of days on district cottage patrols. Good news Despite the high risk of chimney fires, from the popular wood burning stoves and fireplaces during winter's heating season, no blazes were reported from March 5 to March 13 from the region's 11 fire halls between Waubaushene and Waverly.
