Schmidt hooked on racing byPAUL SANDERSON Some fast and furious driving, over the weekend, has _ put Gunter Schmidt back into contention for the title of Ontario's 1986 Ice Racing Champion. A series of collisions on the mile long racetrack in Minden during a previous race left Schmidt's car chained together in several places. Despite the damage, skillful driving, on Saturday and Sunday, advanced him from the bottom of a pack of 32 competitors to 10th place in the overall points record. There are another three com- petitions scheduled for upcoming weekends, in the six race series that determines the Ontario cham- pionship. With the snow kicked up from 30 speeding cars, Schmidt and Co-Driver Fred Aston describe ice-racing to be like 'driving in a blizzard." Therrien's Furniture kept pace with Hind- son's in the hunt for top spot in the standings, by nipping Memories Devils. 4-1. Ken Cowan recorded a pair of counters, while Roy Ferguson and Ken Akerman contributed singles. Trent Maracle tallied the lone Memories' marker. Huronia Optical's Steve Kennedy was named Commodore Hotel Player of the Week. Caley stones Penetang Ryan Caley was a very stingy young man, Sunday afternoon, as he kept Penetang Minor Atoms off the scoreboard while his team won 3-0. Caley deserved full marks for the shutout, as he stymied the Penetang offence time and time again, especially in the third period. It wasn't until the 8:40 mark of the third period that Little Lake Petro Canada broke _ the deadlock when Matthew Stone beat the Penetang goaltender with Jeff Sauve getting the assist. A minute later Sauve notched his own marker with help from Jeff Doughty and Darryl King. Then Doughty put the game on ice with a marker from Chris Bell and Sauve who figured in- all three Midland goals.
