SS ST ERR A i ee Oe - Movie Review -- -101 Dalmatians--- pene meds There seem to be only a couple of good family movies being made each year. For this reason, we can be grateful for the ever- dependable Walt Disney family classics of the past which are oc- casionally reissued. Last year there were new releases of PINOCCHIO and FANTASIA, and now we have oO} DALMATIANS. 101 DALMATIANS was one of the final feature-length cartoons which Disney per- sonally supervised before his death in the mid-1960s. It was made in 1961, and it was followed four years later by THE JUNGLE Stats tell story There were 26 births at Huronia District Hospital last month, reports Gord Key, hospital administrator. The hospital boasted on 86.1 occupancy rate while the emergency department recorded a total of 1,188 visits. And a total of 98 operations were con- ducted at HDH during December. THE JUNGLE BOOK was _§ feeble compared to the classic Disney works of earlier years, but a recent re- viewing of 101 DALMATIANS _ confi- rmed my impression that the cartoon about the dogs holds up quite well after almost a quarter of a century. 101 DALMATIANS is narrated by a Dalmatian dog named Pongo. Pongo says that his pet human Roger used to take him out for a walk each day. It was on one of these walks that Pongo met the love of his life, a cute female Dalmatian named Perdita. Perdita was being walked by a human named Anita. Anita and Roger fall in love and marry, and so do the two dogs. The dogs start their own family and they have a litter of 15 little Dalmatian puppies. Everyone would have lived happily ever after, but for the fact that as in most Disney cartoons, there is a villain. Or I should say a villainous. Cruella deVille is a cruel selfish woman who kidnaps the 15 Mountainview Mall Midland Mark puppies, as well as many other Dalmatian pups. She locks them in an abandoned warehouse, with the intention of using their furs to make a luxurious new coat for herself. The cartoon then chronicles Pongo and Perdita's search for their abducted pups. They are aided in their venture by an animal underground led by a blustery old dog named The Colonel, along with a horse called The Captain and a cat named Tibbs. One of the amusing things about this car- toon is the English accents, since the story is taking place in London, England. I recognized the voice of the dog narrator Pongo as belonging to actor Rod Taylor. Taylor was early in his career at that point and was probably not too well known at the time, but the voice is un- mistakably his. Technology in the 1980s has enabled film makers to do all kinds of amazing things which were not possible two decades ago. But the Disney people came up with their own method of mechanical animation' called Xerography. In this process many virtually identical cartoon. characters were literally Xerox copies filling a frame of film. Xerography certainly came in useful in filming 101 DALMATIANS with its abundance of spotted dogs. As it was, it took a staff of 300 cartoon artists three years to make this film. But the results were worth ate 101 DALMATIANS in its current reissue is en- thralling a completely new generation -- of children. We not only have a good time, but we're working hard to learn a number of new songs. Since the two choruses, the Barrie Mello Blends, and Midland's Georgian Bay Belles joined forces, we have to learn a whole new repetoir in order to put on a show again this coming spring. Right now we are working on numbers like "Give My Regards to Broadway," "Lullaby of Broadway,"' "Song and Dance Man"' and a number of others that fit in with our Broadway released for years to come, just as the even earlier Disney cartoons have been: €HIO, PETER PAN, FANTASIA, LADY AND THE TRAMP, CINDERELLA, and SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. PINOC- sing theme. The chorus has declared February as membership month in order to boost our membership and we are looking for ladies who can carry a tune and who enjoy singing. It isn't necessary to be able to read music or have previous choral experience. We have a very competent director, Bonnie Drever, and the members are all very willing to help newcomers. We sing in four part harmony so we cover any range you voice might fit into. Why not come out and see how much fun Barbershopping can be. We practise every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Elmvale High School. If you need a ride from Midland give Marg Randa a call at 526-4920. FREE Retirement Planning Seminar R.R.S.P.
