Jazz play in the Georgian Bay Men's Basketball -Photo by Andy Wicksted It's not unusual to see local residents heading for Lake Simcoe to waste away a few hours ice fishing. Lake Simcoe offers a variety of species, and, along with its fish, there's also the fifth an- nual Lake Simcoe Ice Fishing Derby. This derby offers better than $20,000 in cash and prizes, making it the largest ice fishing derby I've heard of. Although the derby got underway on Jan. 18 there's still plenty of time to cast a line for a big buck or two. Lines don't have to be salted away until March 2, which is derby deadline. Think of the tackle one could buy with the $1,000 first prize in any one of their five categories. And, the $500 and $250 for second and third would help replenish a few jigs in anyone's tackle box for next year. Five species involved are lake trout, whitefish, pike, perch and herring. Ice conditions may not be too good as yet but ice huts are on the ice and fishermen are taking some good catches 'on Simcoe. Not putting out the $5 entry fee for the Lake Simcoe Ice Fishing Derby would be like heading out on the lake without tackle. Entry forms can be purchased from most ice hut operators around the lake. Good luck. Two local men will think twice about tran- sporting deer without having proper licences attached, and being in possession of illegal wild meat, come next year. Jules Lesperance and Morris Cascagnette received matching fines of $503 for charges under the Game and Fish Act. Each pleaded guilty in court. In handing down the fine Judge Smith noted that Lesperance, with 25 years hunting experience, should have known better. The incident revolved around a deer head without a tag and a heart and liver found in their possession. After an investigation by the Ministry of Natural Resources, charges were laid. resents "Pro Tan Suntan" One-Year Limited-Time Offer 'Memberships - Get a Golden Tan in as little as 5 hours! Kings even season record Friday night at Penetang Arena, Jr. C Kings evened their season record at 16 wins and 16 loses by defeating Oro 77's by an 8-3 count. Brad Denis connected on a play with Blunt and John O'Hara with 13 seconds left on the clock to go into the second frame up by two. Bill Campbell put Oro on the scoreboard before a minute had lapsed in the second stanza, but Dan Archer got that one back for the Kings with a tally at 6:36. Dave Gillespie edged Oro to within one Closed Sundays midway in the period to make the score 3-2. Steve Bauchman notched a pair of markers within 27 seconds in the third, both of them shorthanded, for a 5-2 lead. Don Monteith clicked on the power play with Paul Steele and Warren Hart at 13:29, before Dean Robertson made his shot count, two minutes later, with Bauchman and Dan Archer assisting. Bill Campbell tallied his second of the game 36 seconds later, but Pat Morris found the mark on a power play op- portunity assisted by Archer and Bauchman with a minute and two seconds remaining in the game for an 8-3 triumph.
