--Editorials- Information-honestly, openly and freely shared- is the hallmark of democracy We apologize LAST WEEK this newspaper commented on the recent municipal election results in Midland in an editorial entitled A Clear Message. The editorial concluded that critics of the results were both "irresponsible and in bad taste." Upon reflection, we realize that the description could more aptly be applied to our editorial comment and for that we apologize. The editorial also used the terms '"'bickering, deliberate backbiting, rebellious wrangling and subversive side-taking"' to describe the past three years of municipal government in Midland. Like the perceived activities it describes, language of this tone has no place in Midland's community affairs and should have no place in these columns. Midland does want, as the editorial stated, a new beginning with public-spirited effort at town hall so that local government will accurately reflect the true nature of Midland. Midland's new council has an opportunity, unfettered by the problems of the past, to provide the harmonious and clear sighted local government every Midlander wants and deserves. Very encouraging THE NEWS THAT Mitsubishi by next year will have a second Ontario plant is good news for this area. Mitsubishi, having taken the gamble of establishing a corporate toehold in Canada, by buying RCA's surplus Midland factory, is opening a second factory in 1986 in Waterloo. The new factory in the short run will not mean an increased demand for the television picture tubes produced in Midland. Electrohome has been assembling televisions for Mitsubishi in Waterloo. Mitsubishi has decided to gain more control of production by taking over the assembly. The number of television picture tubes sent from Midland to Kitchener will not change in the near future. Mitsubishi's decision to expand however shows that the Japanese corporation iscommitted tobeing a presence in Canada. Growth of business for Mitsubishi in Canadian and other markets cannot help but be good news for this area. A crowd-pleaser SANTA CLAUS comes to Midland, Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. That's the day he'll be guest of honour in the annual Midland Civitan Club's Christmas extravaganza. The parade will wind its way down King Street from the arena to Bayshore Drive. If the weatherman plays ball with parade organizers you can bet the Dec. 7 crowd-pleaser will be a fun-filled memory-maker. Water war? HOLD ON a minute. First a Penetanguishene entrepreneur proposes bottling Penetanguishene water and selling it to urban dwellers who have doubts about the purity of the liquid that issues from their kitchen taps. Now a Toronto alderman is throwing her support behind the not exactly new idea that Toronto should ensure itself a supply of pure water by running a pipe up Yonge Street and off at a northwest angle to Wiarton. Typical big city thinking. Rush, rush, rush. They can't wait for the water to circulate through Lakes Huron and Erie into Lake Ontario, picking up a rich patina of chemicals. We are a fair walk from Wiarton but we do share a common coastline. Metro Toronto uses 1.24 billion litres of water a day. That might cause a ripple on the Bay. On the other hand, Georgian Bay presently has a nice selection of islands. We don't need to be able to walk to Beausoleil Island. oe Have you seen any evidence oF a big Ganadian cargo Pp that crashed near here : lane ? ) ae IZ, --o. Diabetes s ly ALLEYNE ATTWOOD Recently The Inn at Bay Moorings was the setting for a presentation by Dr. I. Gottesman, diabetes specialist with Mount Sinai Hospital. The luncheon, which was courtesy of the Ames Educational _ Institute and the diabetes care division of Eli Lilly Company, was attended by doctors, nurses, dietitians and other allied health professionals from the area. The very informative talk on the office Management of diabetes was arranged by the diabetes clinic of Penetanguishene General Hospital to bring new and current pecialist addresses professionals trends in diabetes management to health professionals. Of particular interest was Dr. Gottesman's support of home monitoring of blood glucose by the patient, using any one of the monitors now on the market, and also the value of the HB AIC blood test which gives a physician a picture of the level of blood sugar control over a period of three months. He emphasized, among other things, the dangers to the unborn child when, in pregnancy, blood sugar levels are not under control . He stressed that any woman contemplating pregnancy should have a normal blood sugar : E : mergency ' b ; numbers § Cut out and keep handy P | FIRE r] BF Midiana 526-2211 Penetanguishene 549-7425 r] Hillsdale 835-3242 Port McNicoll 526-3300 835-3112 VictoriaHarbour 526-3333 | I TayTownship. 526-2992 --_Elmvale-Flos 322-1313 g inyTownship 526-7133 HoneyHarbour 756-2101 | Coldwater 686-7777 Wasaga Beach 429-2544 | Ul . It was evident that Dr. Gottesman believes in informed patients, educated in the management of their disease. This is very much the mandate of the Canadian Diabetes Association. It is through money raised by memberships, by fund drives, by the individual branches' Money raising activities, that educational material keeps flowing to the diabetics; that professionals such as Dr. Gottesman, the Tri- Dec team, Dr. Wong, Dr. R. Lee in Barrie, and many others, feel it is more than worthwhile to devote time, apart from their practices, to help the diabetic cope intelligently with the disease of diabetes, and perhaps prevent or delay complications. Waubaushene decision reversal 'classic example' Simcoe East MPP Al McLean comments on a reversal of a decision by the provincial government, to give Waubaushene a left turn "Some time ago, I asked the people of the community of Waubaushene and the Township of Tay to get together and request a left turn entrance into Waubaushene."' "The petition from the community and the resolution and support from Township council was certainly a big help to me to get the Minister to reverse his earlier decision. This shows how much can be accomplished through co-operation." "To me, this is a classic example of how co- operation for a common good brings results and those involved all benefit." "T trust this new turning lane will result in increased safety for the residents of Waubaushene, added convenience and additional prosperity for the village. --Letters-- The Penetanguishene Citizen welcomes Letters | to the Editor.
