Port MeNicoel#-- by CLARA POWER Council held its open monthly meeting Nov. 19. The Port MeNicoll Boy Scouts and their leaders were present. Reeve John Moreau explained to the Scouts the various functions of the members of council. He commented later that there were a couple of future councillors in the group. Council passed a resolution to write a letter of support for the diabetes health and education program run by Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie. At this stage council will not implement an automated system (computer) for our library under the Northern Libraries Automation program. There was a letter of thanks from Goldie Parsons of Paradise Point, for the excellent way the roads crew cleaned up her driveway after the September deluge of rain. Council made a donation to Georgian Manor for Christmas presents for some residents from our village. They also donated $100 to the Port MeNicoll Seniors Club, and received a Thank You note. Leaders Kelly Neal the Tracy Todd, plus all the members of the 4-H Club, sent a letter of thanks for the use of the Community Centre for the 4-H Bake Sale. GUIDING AROUND PORT - sent in by Donna Jackson. Nov. 19, 13 Tender- foot Guides are to be enrolled in our unit. The First Port MeNicoll Girl Guides wish to welcome them as true Guides. On Nov. 2 Wanda Dunn, Cheryl Kelly, and Donna Jackson from Guides; Doris Spac, Eleaine Barnes and Theresa Edwards from Brownies, attended an all day training course in Alliston. We took courses in outdoor adventures, crafts, songs and games, and Guiding for handicapped children. It was busy and we all enjoyed it a great deal. The Senior' Girl Guides have been working on a challenge, helping the Port MeNicoll Catholic Women's League to sell tickets at Mountainview Mall and serve tea at their bazaar. We would like to thank the Catholic Women's League for the opportunity to do this community service. We are planning our Christmas party for Dec. 10. The Guides are planning to entertain some senior citizen friends of theirs with carols, games and a Christmas play. This promises to be a lot of fun. The Parents Group committee is having a Children's Christmas bazaar and tea on Nov. 30. Proceeds raised here will be used for various outings for our girls, including camping. Do drop in and sample the delicious homemade food, compliments of Shirley. Herbert Merry has closed the doors of the Paulie Bergie Antique Shop after 27 years in business in Victoria Harbour. He has been collecting antiques since he was a child, and has been an antique dealer most of eventually be torn down, although Mr. Merry feels this to be a 'shame because it has historical significance. The Manor House next door, which was part of his business, burned around 1967. It was rebuilt the following fall and winter, with Merry supervising while living in the apartment over the shop. His daughter, Susie Lucas, drew the design for the building. Herbert Merry first built his cottage, Owls Crofts, in Victoria Harbour 40 years ago. He said that he had to live 25 years in the Harbour to be accepted - prior to that he was considered a tourist. Merry is also the author of God Is In The Attic, Try The Boogie Hole, and Dead Dogs Don't Bark. All of these stories span his years of life, starting at King's Castle in Oakville. He is leaving for Florida for the winter, and we will likely get a sequel. Although his shop wil be torn down, his books will still be available at The Workshop in Victoria Harbour.
