--E£ditoriais Information-honestly, openly and freely shared- is the hallmark of democracy "Baseball Flu' THERE APPEARS to be a fever of sorts sweeping the North American work force. Some have coined the "'disease" Baseball Flu. Whatever the name, the symptoms appear to be much the same, an itching to get out of the office early and home to watch those ball teams competing for the right to play in the World Series. Thanksgiving 1985 THE LONG Thanksgiving Weekend has come and gone for another year but the business of thanks-giving shouldn't. It's often been said, '"'The Creator's giving deserves our thanks-giving."' It would be a rare person, indeed, and quite frankly one to be pitied who cannot find cause for giving thanks. Thanksgiving should reaffirm in all of us, a spirit of gratitude. The Pilgrim Mothers and Fathers at Plymouth on that first Thanksgiving day in 1621 knew the real meaning of thanks- giving. They never let the abundance of the Creator's gifts cause them to forget the Giver...nor should we more than three centuries later. Beautiful October SOME OF THE most beautiful literature in the world has been penned concerning the month of October. Traditionally, October is a golden month. Nature puts on one last gorgeous showy display of her talents, touching trees with her magic wand, before making way for Old Man Winter. Sunshine Magazine puts it this way when talking about Beautiful October: ""Most of us walk through each day in a straight line, following a pattern from morning to evening, seeing only necessities, dutifully doing our duty. "'Some fortunate few with imagination and a creative feel for life take a wider view, a more exploratory route, seeing the possibilities on the edges and relating them to truth at the centre. "October is the month for poets, for the creative person, for the person with imagination -- the one who sees sermons in stones and happiness in winged butterflies, who points up truth in images, who fashions words which will be remembered. "Creativity has been defined as seeing ideas in new relationships, as discovering or producing something new through one's own thinking. All creativeness lies within the creator, for creation is a qualitiative experience of the highest order, and it brings into activity the whole person. 'Walk creatively through these glorious October days." Although it is difficult to determine which is the most beautiful season in Sunshine Park, surely October is the most '"'showy" time when the trees are clad in their flaming leaf-dressing of red and gold -- one last riotous fling before the chilling winds of November bring the wintertime. The poet Louis Darcy expressed it this way: Autumn hour, still so still, Here upon a flaming hill Beauty is around me now, Red and gold upon the bough. 1 can feel God's love and power In this silent, autumn hour. National Crime Prevention Week was inaugurated in 1983 to raise Canadians' awareness of how much they, as individuals, can do to prevent crime in their communities. I am impressed by how many community groups, individuals, politicians and community leaders support the concept of community-based crime prevention and are actively taking part in National Crime Prevention Week activities. This year, I will be travelling across Canada to recognize, through the Solicitor General's Crime Prevention Awards. individuals and groups who | They were the first to graduate from Georgian College programs cal Engineering and the Heidel-Electrical Eng- CATHY DUPUIS Eight residents from Penetanguishene were in the first ever Fall Convocation ceremonies at Georgian first graduates of the three year Computer Programmer / Analyst Program. Police want and need everyone's support in preventing crime and I am heartened by the widespread encouragement police across Canada have given to Crime Prevention Week. With business, the community, police and governments behind National Crime Prevention Week, I know that this year's Week will be a great success.
