| Health minister requests public opinion on issue The recent breakdown in talks between the Ontario Medical Association and the Provincial Ministry of Health, has prompted Health Minister Murray Elston to request direct input from the public sector on the question of extra billing for health services. In his keynote address to representatives from Ontario's 26 district health councils, at their Ottawa Action Centre last Friday night, Elston announced a schedule of one day community consultations. "Up to this point, I have been: unable to discuss this matter with the Ontario Medical © Association since the physicians' association appears to have opted out of negotiations,' he said. Although the Simcoe County District Health Council was not selected to participate, about half of the province's health councils, including Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto, Hamilton, London, and Windsor, will be directly involved. Midland's Nancy Keefe, treasurer of the Simcoe County District Health Unit, reports, most delegates in the Ottawa annual meeting were "surprised" by Elston's announcement. The meetings are to be widely publicized, she says, and the entire series should be complete by early next month. Elston suggested Saturdays for the meeting, to permit attendance by the maximum number of interested people, Drafted recommendations from each public forum will later be sent to his office. Elston also announced several initiatives in the area of health promotion. They include: compiling a provincial directory of health promotion programs in Ontario which relate to smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, nutrition and fitness; establishing a Health Promotion Evaluation Fund, to receive $1 million in fiscal year 1986-87, which will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion programs; creation of an annual awards program to recognize employer excellence in health promotion. $1 million to be well spent: SCBE The press was assured, at a _ recent meeting of the Simcoe County Board of Education, that a motion passed earlier this year to spend $1 million replacing brickwork at Eastview Secondary School in Barrie required several months to a year of intense investigation before the motion was put forward. Meanwhile, the board was given the go-ahead to spend $331,000 on a general purpose room at Waubaushene __ Public School.
