er Black Friday Friday's devastating tornadoes narrowly missed the very Heart of Huronia (Midland- Penetanguishene) here in cottage country. For a time, it ap- peared a major thun- derstorm sweeping in from Southern Georgian Bay would flatten the area. However, its' thrust was felt further south despite the fact several centimetres of rain was dumped on cottage country from 4 p.m. to shortly after 5 p.m. As was, the fierce storm, the seventh since Good Friday, was enough to send shoppers indoors. Niagara Falls reported hailstones the size of golf balls falling on the peninsula. The previous day, hailstones the size of iennis balls rained down on the Sun Parlour of Ontario, Leamington, causing millions of dollars damage to the province's' lucrative green-house-plants industry... Several twisters also touched down. outside Buffalo, Friday. Others destroyed homes in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and New York counties. Night comes early to Central Ontario Most people whose lives were touched by Hurrican Hazel (Oct. 15, 1954) will tell you, how the sky blackened in the afternoon as though it was night. The same description has been given over and over again by victims of last Friday's six . devastating tornadoes in central Ontario. They tell of the sky growing dark, hearing the winds howl, swit- ching their headlight and house lights on and then living through a kind of hell they really cannot describe. They tell of seeing rubbish and _ litter swirling in the wind and then once the twister had past, seeing clear blue skies as though there had been no bad weather at all. Only the devastation left in the twisters' wake told of how bad the storms had been. Target: Holland Marsh Holland Marsh wasn't spared from one of Friday's six tornadoes. Warehouses were levelled, roofs were ripped off homes and a number of barns were destroyed. Cost of the damage has yet to be estimated, but it is expected to run into the millions.
