Film crew zero in on Midhurst: by KATY AUSTIN When "Anne of Green Gables"' is aired on CBC television next December, viewers in North Simcoe may recognize the schoolhouse scenes. Film crews spent four days in Midhurst last week shooting in and around the old Cundles schoolhouse, one of many original pioneer buildings at the Simcoe County Museum. The classic Canadian story by Lucy Maude Montgomery stars Megan Follows as Anne, the delightful, redheaded teenager from Prince Edward Island in the early 1900's. Other well-known Canadian actors in the cast are Marilyn Lightstone as Miss Stacy, Richard Farnsworth as Matthew, and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla. The scenery in the film is not the only local connection. Ron French, who grew up in Midland and has many relatives in the area, is one of the assistant directors. Nine Barrie youngsters are also seen in the film as extras for schoolhouse scenes. They were chosen from among 68 children who auditioned for the work. They admit that they were not judged on their acting ability; the extras have no lines. Rather, they were selected for their looks and size and whether they would fit the costumes on hand. Even though they spend most of their time waiting for a scene to be prepared, the local youngsters say they have learned a great deal about how a film is made. Many would like to pursue an acting career after having had this experience. "Anne of Green Gables"' is being produced as a joint venture among the CBC, the American Public Broadcasting System, a German broadcasting company, and Telefilm. When completed, it will take the form of a four-hour mini-series, shown over two nights. Other scenes are being shot at similar pioneer villages in Kitchener, Pickering and Hamilton. > Rrretrriirit Brule in Penetang The bearded gentleman is Etienne Brule - well someone dressed up to look like him.
