Dan Maloney and the Ladies 'A uxihary stage another super MMHA Awards With the enthusiastic help of a throng of young hockey players, the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Midland Minor Hockey Association staged another highly successful Annual Banquet and Awards Night, on Thursday in the Centennial Arena. It was obvious from the reactions of the 350 MMHA skaters, and their parents, that the highlight of the might was the 40 minute speech by special guest Dan Maloney, Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Many parents commented that Maloney was the speaker yet o ailfend the annual banquet. During a question and answer period, one bold young hockey player asked Maloney, "How does it feel to be in the basement?"' "Maloney coolly replied that he wasn't sure yel, because they hadn't been there long." His predictions included the Edmonton Oilers for the Stanley cup this year, and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1986. With the addition of the Esso medals, for Most Valuable, Most Sportsmanlike, and Most Improved Player on each team, over 300 awards were presented Thursday night. Among the recipients was Sherri Major, one of three girls active in Midland Minor Hockey, who received the Esso Most Valuable Player medal, for her efforts as goalie with the Meatland sponsored Tyke team. New this year were the Special Awards, donated by the Ladies' Auxiliary, to one player from the Rep Division and one from the House League Division, based on points accumulated during the season. Archie Meridis, of the Major Midget's Royal Canadian Legion, and Bryan Poirier, of Walker's Electric Bantam House League Champions, took the honours.
