Bob Kumney, Auctioneer 30b 53A-35 X Y "1 t ~ Les 429-5084 93 Take sting out of ] tT | a Cold weather does expensive things to your car's fuel consumption, but there are ways to take the sting out of winter. A block heater can make it easier to start the engine in cold weather. Rather than wasting the electricity to have it on all night, or getting up very early in the morning to plug it in, buy a timer and set it to go on two hours before you need the car. Once the car is started, don't go back in the house for a second cup of coffee. Even on cold days you are unlikely to need more than 30 seconds to get: the car warm enough for driving. All parts of the drive train must warm up in order for the car to run at peak efficiency, but the transmission, differential and tires will not warm up unless the car is moving. Driving the car slowly for the first ten , minutes will give the drive train a chance to warm up. Tires are also affected by winter tem- perature fluctuations. With each 10 degree celcius drop in temperature tire pressure decreases. It pays to check the tire pressure regularly since underinflated tires make a car use more fuel and are more prone to blow out. Tire pressure can easily be measured with a pressure gauge and is best done when tires have not been used for several hours. Underinflated tires can be filled free of charge at a service station air pump to the maximum pressure level stamped on the tire sidewall. As most summer radial tires are not ef- ficient in snow, snow tires should be installed. With a front wheel drive car it is best to put snow tires on all four wheels. If the summer radials are fitted on non-traction wheels make sure the snow tires installed are also radials. Be sure to remove snow tires immediately once the snow is gone in the spring. The ef- ficiency decreases significantly when not driven on snow. It's not a bad idea to change your engine oil at least twice a year and one of those changes should be just before winter sets in. As temperatures drop the engine oil becomes thicker, so take this opportunity to switch to a lower viscosity (thinner) 5W-30 oil. At the same time get your mechanic to set the idle speed, timing, and mixture to manufacturer's specifications. This is also a good time for you to check and fill antifreeze and other fluids. Planning your trips carefully is important in cold weather. Because cold cars are relatively inefficient, short trips, which don't give your car a chance to warm up are ex- pensive. Try to do all errands in.one extended trip. And remember not to leave your car idling when running in to do errands - it take more fuel to leave the car idling than it does to stop and restart it. Even though drivers tend to drive fewer kilometers in winter months, their fuel consumption does not decrease propor- tionately. The average Ontario fuel con- sumption ration for personal cars varies from 13.1 L kn (21.6 mpg) in summer to 15.6 L km (18.1 mpg) in winter. Any fuel economy tips implemented during winter will pay double dividends. The agerage car uses about 630 litres from January to March. At 47 cents per litre, that's almost $300. A 15 percent saving - possible with care - would net you almost $45.
