Mayor thanked for his honest efforts Dear Editor: Ihave known Al Roach for a good many years. I have always found him to be honest, quiet, con- siderate and an understanding man. There is no doubt in my mind that he had to be provoked to no end before he would strike anyone. Since becoming mayor our councillors have done nothing but badger him and try to discredit him. He must truly be a fine person to have stood it this long. Al has stood fast on all his commitments at election time. For example his stand against annexation. He has not bent to their harassment and-I don't believe he ever will. As for all the Tired of their antics Dear Editor: Regarding the incident in the Council Chambers on Monday, Nov. 12, 1984, I have a few thoughts to share with your readers. Firstly, I fully support the efforts of His Worship, the Mayor, whose goal. turmoil that has always been present in our council in the past two years, I blame it on the clique we have going among our councillors. It's too bad some of them would not grow up and get down to doing something constructive for our community. I do believe that Mr. Roach was right in ob- jecting to a new vehicle for Mr. Elder and why? if it is to be used strictly for town business does he require air-conditioning and FM radio. I wonder how many of our tax payers have taken the time to attend one of our council meetings? Why not take a Monday night sometime and see the show. Then you would come away with a clear in my opinion, has always been to the betterment of our town. He has shown great compassion and un- derstanding when dealing with our neighbouring communities (ie: Mountainview zoning Save Wildlife Centre Dear Editor: An overwhelming public response is being heard, asking for a reversal of the decision by Environment Minister Suzanne Blais-Grenier to close the Wye Marsh Wildlife Interpretation Centre on April 1, 1985. Support to keep the centre open has come from hundreds of individuals in the Midland- Penetanguishene area, from many local groups and from others throughout the province. The Friends of Wye Marsh is a non-profit association, cooperating with the Canadian Wildlife Service at Wye Marsh. They are en- couraging the public to express their discontent over this decision and to write to the Environment Minister in Ottawa. Although the Friends of Wye Marsh have sent a telegram to Madame Blais-Grenier they have had no reply nor consultation from the minister. In addition, the Friends are urging Mr. Doug Lewis, M.P. Simcoe North, to contact them over this important matter and to take action. The economic benefits of the wildlife centre are important to this area, attracting 40,000 visitors including over 7,000 school children annually. The Seeks comments, suggestions Dear Editor: The announcement of the closure of the Black and Decker housewares plant in Barrie strikes hard at the economy of the region and is a con- tinuation of a disturbing trend of plant closures across Ontario. It is my view that the Ontario Government has failed to strenuously resist these closures, which have cost our people thousands of jobs and is making economic recovery increasingly difficult. In response to the Black and Decker an- nouncement, Hugh O'Neil, MPP Quinte, my Party's Industry and Trade Critic this week tabled a resolution in the Ontario Legislature calling on "the Government of Ontario to take all possible and necessary actions to see that all of the threatened jobs are preserved." A copy of this statement and the resolution are attached. I would appreciate receiving any comments or suggestions you might have regarding this matter. Very sincerely, -David Peterson Leader of the Opposition Roach hasn't been served considering taking legal steps himself Midland Mayor Al Roach says he has not been served with a summons of any sort to appear in court as a result of a Nov. 12 fracas at town hall between himself and Alderman Patrick Kearns. When asked Monday to discuss the matter, the alderman would offer only '"'no comment." Meanwhile, the mayor hasn't ruled out taking legal action himself against the alderman and others for harrassment. The mayor has admitted "'slapping"' his colleague during an in-camera council meeting after the alderman, in the mayor's words, repeatedly called him a liar. The alderman was quoted in last Friday's Weekender as saying he, the alderman, was hit with a sidearm blow like a karate chop to the bridge of his nose and forehead during a debate between himself and the mayor. Since the incident last week, Mayor Roach has sent a letter of apology to Alderman Kearns for Friends of Wye Marsh are urging all concerned individuals to write (no postage required) to: The Hon Madame Suzanne Blais-Grenier Minister Department of the Enivronment Parliament Buildings House of Commons Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 For more details or information on how you can help, call the Wye Marsh Wildlife Intrepretation Centre, Midland, 526-7809. contact: Bob Whittam or Mike Hines -Friends of Wye Marsh Respect for flags Dear Editor: On Nov. 11, those who cared and were able, paid their respects at the Cenotaph. - New flags had been raised in honour of the occasion, in sharp contrast to the rags and tatters of once proud emblems which were atop two flagpoles on Poyntz Street. The national and provincia! flags are being treated with an undeserving disrespect, and I would suggest that the local councils address the matter of flag protocol: Now that Branch 68 of the Royal Canadian Legion has accepted responsibility for the upkeep of the Cenotaph, we shall see an improvement in that area. -G. Russell Penetang Annie has a new home Dear Editor: The North West Basin Volunteer. Fire Depart- ment would like to thank all those who volunteered their help and support towards the purchase of a resusci-annie. We now have Annie .in our possession. Your generosity in the past and future is greatly ap- preciated. : Yours, with many thanks ' -N.W.B.F.D Tiny Twp. SALE Sale runs until Nov. 30 picture of the idiotic and childish behaviour of the majority of our council members, and, understand the frustrations that Mayor Roach has to contend with. I am sure you would all have a better un- derstanding of the situation than you get from hear say or the media. Inthe meantime I would like to thank our mayor for all of his honest efforts inthe past and wish him the very best in the future. Yours truly, = Bill English situation). This should be remembered by all our citizens before they make judgements as to Mr. Roach's character. Further it is important to remember his guiding role during the Papal visit this past summer. Even the Pope remarked upon his return to the Vatican City, that the Midland tour was the highlight of his Canadian Pilgrimage. We should feel proud of our town and the Mayor who contributes so much time and energy to a job that others seem to take pleasure in minimizing. Those whose efforts have been solely dedicated to holding up important legislation by name calling and fillibustering, while perhaps not deserving of physical reproach, certainly deserve a calling down by the voters of this town. WELL DONE MR. ROACH!!!! I, John Public, am concerned regarding my employees' behavior. Mr. Kearns would do well to remember who pays his wages, then perhaps he would be hesitant in requesting the resignation of another employee, who is on Council for the betterment of our town. It's time the little boys got back to the business of the town, and do the work for which they were hired io do. Take note, Mr. Kearns, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Jef- fery, and Mr. Ross!!! People of this town are tired of your antics. Methinks. there may not be enough town business to keep you busy, perhaps it would well serve the Town of Midland to cut down the num- bers of representatives on council and let those who are interested in the welfare of the Town, get on with it.
