b 1c. ie : - Villa fire drill Mock evacuation goes off without 2 PAUL SANDERSON With the fire alarm ringing, and the loudspeakers announcing, "Code Red!, Code Red!, third floor lounge," 30 Grade 8 students from Monsignor Castex School were successfully evacuated during a mock fire drill at the Villa Community Care Centre last Friday. Friday was the fifth time students have taken the place of Villa residents during a mock evacuation. Student participation allows staff to practice and improve their procedures without unnecessary risk to patients. Assistant Administrator David Jarlette was pleased with the per- formance of his staff, who matched their record of previous years and evacuated the entire third floor with no injuries in 22 minutes. Each of the 30 students from hitch teacher Jim McGregor's class adopted the name of an actual Villa resident. Multi-coloured coded medical tags around their necks described the physical condition of each. The realism of the drill, and its benefit to the staff, was greatly enhanced as pupils acted out their conditions ranging from being confused and suffering from smoke inhalation to an amputee confined to a wheelchair. "It's their imaginations that make young people our first choice for this exercise," says Jarlette. McGregor explains how the annual fire drill evacuation is part of an ongoing relationship between his school and the acredited nursing home. The Grade 8 pupils sometimes visit with patients seven or eight times each year and join them for mass and social activities.
