Ontario's commit- ment to the farm community, however, does not end there. Just a few weeks ago cheques totalling $5.8 million were mailed out to 2,817 farmers under Ontario's Sow-Weaner Program. Delayed by _ the Liberal Government in Ottawa until July 18th, the payments--including $3.6 million in direct provincial government support--cover the period between October 1, 1983, and March 31, 1984. We have, I might add, asked for equal treatment for our beef and lamb producers. And I quote directly from a letter from Agriculture and Food Minister Dennis 'Tim- brell to former Agriculture Minister Ralph Ferguson. "The Government of Canada has behaved responsibly in providing a substantial stabilization payment to Canadian hog producers,' my Queen's Park colleague said. Pine plight of Canadian beef and sheep producers is no less severe, and the goodwill that could be generated by a stabilization payment may ease the bridging © between the current and proposed _ stabilization plans. "TI am, therefore, requesting that you consider and propose to Federal Cabinet ASA payments for beef (slaughter and cow- ealf) and sheep in 1983 and 1984 to all eligible Canadian beef and sheep producers.
