----_----_-- i een Ce Te i NS EO eee, Editorials Information-honestly, openly and freely shared- is the hallmark of democracy Fun-filled series HATS OFF to our own resident jock, Randy Butineau, for organizing last Saturday's day-long Media Slo-Pitch Tournament in Midland. Despite the fact that our own Citizen Times Lancers didn't win the trophy (nor came close to winning it), the day was nothing short of a major success. To CKMP, The Midland Free Press and Bayweb who also entered teams we'd just like to say, thanks for a day of good fun. Celebrate your faith POPE JOHN PAUL'S planned visit to Huronia on Saturday, Sept. 15, has already prompted much interest. The historic event will be a memorable one for people of all ages and from all walks of life who plan to be on hand at Martyrs' Shrine and Sainte Marie among the Hurons to catch a glimpse of the Pontiff. We should never forget the fact that the Holy Father's September visit to Canada is more than a media event...it's a spiritual one in keeping with his role as Bishop of Rome. (As his name suggests, he comes to the role of Peter in spirit of his predecessors, John XXIII, Paul VI and in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.) The Papal Visit will be a pastoral one, affording the Pope the opportunity to underline and add to the constant pastoral teaching of his Canadian bishops: challenging Christians to build a world inspired by gospel principles of justice, truth and love. Well done bowlers MIDLAND LAWN BOWLING CLUB was the place to be last Saturday. It was there that club members hosted the Provincial Playdowns (Second stage). fee From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., competitors bowled their hearts out. Club president Ray Goodenough, greens keeper Bruce MacArthur and Clare Atkin will be representing Midland lawn bowlers next month in Brampton for the provincial playdowns thanks to the victory(s) they garnered on the weekend here in Huronia. The greens at the local lawn bowling club are second to none and so is the competitive spirit of those men and women who call Midland Lawn Bowling Club their home. Flags not gun(s) start Tecumseth Trophy Race A new wrinkle has mark and the course will thus be shortened to The Tecumseth This is our cartoonist-turned-catcher's view of last Saturday's Media Slo-Pitch Tourney in Midland Landing pad happenings Dear Editor: The Ministry of Health has just approved the construction of Heliports at both the Huronia District Hospital and Penetanguishene General Hospital. These new facilities, consisting of a circular paved area surrounded by a series of lights and a wind indieator will allow for night lime landing of the Ministry of Health helicopter. At present the Bandage I helicopter can land only during the daylight hours but with the addition of the new sites, landings will be possible both day and night. The Helipads will be located on the west side of the property between the perimeter road and the main parking lot at Huronia District Hospital, and will be located on the eastern end of the property alt Penetanguishene General Hospital. We will jointly be going out to tender shortly in order that construction can be completed prior to the papal visit on Sept. 15, 1984. In summary, the Helipad will add a closer link between our hospitals and the metropolitan hospitals for the treatment of major medical cases, thereby- bringing the residents of the Huronia area that much closer to the specialized medical care provided in the metropolitan hospitals. ---Sister Joan Whalen, Administrator, Penetanguishene General Hospital ---Gordon A. Key, Administrator, Huronia District Hospital cards were issued-o area citizens. I was impressed with the quality and quantity of media time given to such a worthwhile community program. --R. W. Cummings, Chief of Police. Town of Penetanguishene Efforts were appreciated Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the many volunteers who helped make our attempt at hosting the 1984 Provincial Women's Softball Regional playoffs a real success. The weather was certainly against us but with the complete co-operation of the three com- munities Wyevale, Elmvale, and Hillsdale we were fortunate enough to remain on schedule. The Wyevale group of Ted Hall, Jill Reynolds, and Betty Hall did a super job on Friday night with only one hours' notice. Hillsdale headed by Tim Johnston and Lineel Trew and manned by the Hillsdale Sr. mens ball teani are to be commended for maintaining their diamond under very adverse conditions all day Saturday. I might add they dragged the diamond been added to the Tecumseth 'Trophy Race for 1984. Organizer Burke Penny of Penetanguishene's Historic Naval and Military Establishm- ents, has announced that the 12 nautical mile race course may be shortened due to wind conditions. Says Penny, "Tf the first boat has not reached the Beausoleil Island mark by 1500 hours (3 p.m.) this will become the turning 4.7 nautical miles."' Gun signals for the race start will be provi- ded by the soldiers of the Establishments 24th regiment guard using muskets. However, official race signals will be flags not guns. Division B boats start at 1315 hours (1:15 p.m.). Division A starts at 1400 hours (2 p.m.) and Division C for cen- treboard boats will start at 1430 (2:30 p.m.). Trophy Race is part of the celebration of Liberty Days at the Establishments, July 28 and 29. There is no entry fee for the sailing race, but contestants must submit entry forms before 6 p.m. Friday, July 27. Forms are available at H.N.M.E. in Penetanguishene, at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, Midland or at area marinas. after every game which was very impressive and much appreciated. Our own Elmvale diamond. took the worse beating since it had the most games played on it, bul as usual it was always playable due mainly to great efforts of Paul (Gummy) Rowat, Lou Turner, Stan Furlong, Frank Reynolds, Graig Cochrane, Murray Chapman Jr. and Kevin Coulter. I again say thanks to all of these people for their devoted effort. Also Judy Milan, Annette Craddock, Dorion Parker, Don McFadden, Steve McGinnis, and Dave Raycraft deserve a thank you for their fine job of broadcasting and score-keeping over the three days of exciting softball. Last but certainly not Jeast a thank you goes to Mrs. Frank Vollick (BaBa)Smokey, and Lorna Edwards for their tiring hours of taking admission which they do so well. The committee from P.W.S.A. were extremely impressed with our efforts and also the facilities in all three of our communities. I would also as chairman of the ball parks in Elmvale like to say thank you to a_ local businessman in E]mvale who helped us get our diamond in shape last May. Mr. Gambriell, owner of Elmvale's Black Top Paving donated free of charge a man and paving roller for one whole day to enable us to flatten our outfield. Again I say thank you to the many people in- volved in our Ladies softball endeavour and without you it could not have been as successful or satisfying. Yours truly, John Brown Chairman P.W.S.A. Reg.
