by ALLAN K. MCLEAN, MPP Simcoe East Canada Day this year has become the focus for many community events marking the bicentennial of the Province of Ontario. This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of the beginning of permanent settlement in Our province. Simcoe County has a proud part in the story of our province. Long before serious. set- tlement began in Ontario, the great French explorer Samuel De Champlain visited Teenager unlawfully at large Timothy E . Deschamps, 17, for IMpcennney, Ona Penetanguishene was charged Monday by Midland OPP with being unlawfully at large. The teenager was the Object of a search after he was reported missing early Sunday evening from Hillsdale Correctional Facility. He had been serving a sentence Of breach of probation at the time. Tie-less routine catches on Midland has followed Penetanguishene in the matter of | summer clothing guidelines. During July and August, in Midland, the aban- donment of ties is en- couraged. The idea behind the tieless months is_ that tourists will feel more comfortable with local people who are in- formally dressed. Members' of _ the council and of the town staff are included in the declaration by the town that ties are not ex- pected to be worn in July and August, unless circumstances demand a tie. 'the Orillia area. Orillia is connected with other famous names in the story of Ontario, and Canada. Sir Sam Steele, an original member of the North West Mounted Police who preserved order during the Yukon gold-rush, was born in Orillia. Another' Orillia native, at least during the summer months, is the famous Canadian humourist Stephen Leacock. Midland is famous for Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, the ill-fated Jesuit mission station that was destroyed by an Iroquois war party in the seventeenth cen- tury. In the over-all history of our province, per- manent settlement in Simcoe County is fairly recent. Following the end of the War of 1812, velerans began clearing the land around Lake Simeoe, establishing the roots for the com- munities and townships we know today. During this summer, it would be a good idea to get the family together and visit some of the museums and historic sites that dot our county. This would make a pleasant day's outing, as well as provide you with a glimpse of our area's past. The bicentennial of our province serves lo remind us of the strength and leadership that our province has shown in the past, and continues to show today. Just look at the record! Ontarians are world-beaters al whatever goal they set themselves - whether it be in the field of sports, of commerce, of the arts or what have you. Get to know the story of Simeoe County and the Province of Ontario. I'm sure you will find our history to be in- spiring. At a time when our Province is facing new challenges from a variety of changes, there is no better moment to gain strength from _ the wisdom and achievements: of our ancestors. Happy Canada Day, and happy bicentennial! May best team win Dear Editor: It was exactly two years ago that the un- forgettable battle of Elmvale took place, at the Elmvale Ball Park. It was the day that the Elmvale Mets went head to head with their cross town rivals the Elmvale Sports. After all the smoke had cleared the Mets had come out vic- torious with a stunning 1 to 0 win. The winning run came when Met shortstop Kevin Steele drove in second baseman Ken Graham in the bottom of the fifth inning. This win put the Mets into the tournament final against Bayfield Furniture, but after the emotional draining victory over the Sports, the Mets had nothing left to give and lost 7 to 0. In the two years since, things have changed somewhat. In the initial meeting there was quite a few brother combinations. There was Kevin Fleming of the Mets against Brent Fleming of the Sports, Brian and Tim Belcourt against brother Ron, "Rusty"' McGinnis against twin brothers Tim and Tom. 'To complicate matters worse, Tom McGinnis was a coach with the Mets and Met coach Jim Dixon was an executive member of the Sports. What this meant was that each team was familiar with each other's styles as well as their signals. Since this time Met players Kevin Steele, Kevin Fleming and Brian Belcourt have all moved up to the Sports. While the stage has been set for a rematch, the Elmvale Mets are to meet the Elmvale Sports in the first round action of the July 1st tournament at the Elmvale Ball park. It seems that the only way the Sports could be assured of meeting the Mets was to play them in the first round. This is due to the fact that the Mets will be gunning for the top money, while the Sports will be playing for something a little less. The reason the Mets can say this is because of our excellent pitching led by Tim Belcourt and Bruce Graves and backed by a steady defence Time out for supper A pot luck supper was held at Midland Lawn Bowling Club as part of a jitney staged al the greens last Saturday. From all reports a good eRnugge! lime was had by all of the 100 or so people who took part in the event. Also, the Mets are an aggressive team. We can steal bases, hit and run and score runs as well as the Sports if not better. Simply put, the Mets are younger and can do these things better than an "older and more ex- perienced"' team. With all of this said, I hope no one took it to heart. The Mets realize thal they are going to be in for one tough game against the Sports. Both teams have areas in which they excell and areas that can be exploited by the other team. I hope that the baseball fans of Elmvale and area come out and see this game, Friday night at 9 p.m., and who knows, maybe everything that has been stated may be true, but you won't know unless you see for yourself. P.S. May the best team win.
