The challenge, drama and excilement of the XXIIIrd Olympiad unfolds July 23 in Los Angeles, California and the CBC will be there to provide complete daily coverage on its English and French television and radio networks. In spite of the boycott by teams from _ the Soviet Union, East Germany and 12 other nations, a record 142 countries are expected (o compete. The CBC and Canada's top athletes have been gearing up for these 16 days in Los Angeles since the last major international competition in Augus! of 1983, the World University Games from Edmonton. This year's Olympic Games may well be one of the most successful ever for Canadian athletes, with medal hopes for boxers Willie deWit and Shawn O'Sullivan, swimmers Alex Baumann and Victor Davis, high- jumper Milt Otltey, sprinters Angella Taylor and Angela Bailey and the women's field hockey team. More than 400 Canadian athletes are to attend the Games. They will compete against the finest athletes from such countries as the United States, Britain, Italy, France, Romania and the People's Republic of China, which this year marks its reemergence into Olympic competition after an absence of more than 25 years. CBC English and French television will augment the In- ternational coverage supplied by host broadcaster ABC Sports Inc. with nine elec- tronic-news-gathering units, and five unilateral cameras permanently in place at the major venues. This will enable CBC to spotlight Canadians in competition, examine life in the Olympic Village and introduce the CBC commentators al the major events. To give Canadians this unique perspective, the CBC English television sports department will be sending a contingent of 125 technicians, com mentators, cameramen and production people to Los Angeles, CBC French television sports will use 110 personnel and the sports depart- ments from the English and French _ radio networks will send a combined total of 55 people to the Games. The CBC will have access {o all of the material supplied by ABC, which will have approximately 3,000 production and on-air personnel on hand to provide coverage to a worldwide audience estimated at 2.5 billion people. As the athletes battle for medals in 21 Olympic sports, and compete in baseball and tennis, the demon- stration sports, CBC viewers will be able to take advantage of the massive resources of ABC Sports, which includes 144 studio cameras, 64 hand-held cameras, 32 mobile units, five helicopters and even two 60-foot custom-built boats. The English and French television networks are scheduling ' approximately the same number of hours of domestic coverage as ABC. For the English network, 193! hours of programming is scheduled, with coverage each day from approximately 11 a.m. (eastern) 10 2 a.m. (eastern) with breaks only for local and national news. Much of this coverage will be live and in prime-time, including the colorful Opening and closing ceremonies. The French network is scheduling almost the identical number of hours. CBC's English and French. radio networks are also planning ex- tensive coverage. English radio has scheduled four hours of programming daily, combining entertain- ment news from Hollywood with live commentary of all the major Olympic events. French radio is plan- ning a two-hour package of straight Olympic coverage each evening with five-minule Olympic news breaks each hour for the duration of the Games. Commentators for CeBrG English television's coverage of the Olympics are CBC Sportsweekend host Brian Williams and Grey Cup Game host and Edmonton = sport- seaster John Wells.
