Hard-To-Hold TERRY DUPUIS Teen idol Rick Springfield made his movie acting debut in a new fillm called Hard To Hold. Springfield is best known these days as a rock star, but he is not entirely new to the acting profession. It was an acting stint as a regular on the television soap opera "General Hospital" which first shot him to fame, after a decade of trying to make a big name for himself in the music field. Ironically, it was after his role as a doctor on the television series that he was finally able to land a record con- tract which led to the many hits which made him a rock star. Now Springfield has attempted to launch a movie career with Hard To Hold. The result is not a_ sensationally outstanding debut, but al least it's not an embarrassment either. The actor-singer turns in an agreeably light performance in what is basically a lightweight movie. Hard To Hold is a romantic comedy which also contains some music. Springfield plays the role of a popular rock concert singer who finds that fame has a price which can become a burden. The teenage girls who compose the bulk of his fans are constantly chasing him. He probably found this to bea dream come true at first but after several years of this fanatical attention, he has ROXY THEATRE MIDLAND 526-5791 ROXY PEN 1 FOR THE BREAK OF YOUR FE! ¢ pangnrat Suipauct Held Over 7&9 5 FIRESTARTER Sat. MALIBU HIGH a fun musically oriented movie become frustrated. The character which Springfield portrays has been involved in an on- again-off-again rom- ance with a songwriter named Nicky. But the relationship has left them both discontented. Then one day the singer is involved in a car accident when he collides with a car driven by a _ young woman named Diana. Diana, as it turns out is a counsellor for ex- ceptional children. She is almost the complete opposite of Nicky, in fact she doesn't have much in common with Springfield either. And their first meeting is antagonistic. She is quite unimpressed by the fact that he is a famous rock star. In fact she says that her favourite singer is Tony Bennett. Bul Springfield is undaunted. It is precisely the fact that she is not after him for whohe is which appeals {o the weary singer. So he ardently pursues Diana. He even hires a Tony Bennett lookalike to sing a romantic Vasey al Perkinsfield Wyevale at Hillsdale Midland at CBO ballad under her win- dow. 'These childlike antics gradually win Diana over, and a romance develops. Hard To Hold is far from being a new plot. It's basically the same story which romantic comedies have served up for decades, in which opposites attract. A man and a woman meet who are of vastly dif- ferent backgrounds and temperaments, and after a lot of disagreements, misun- derstandings and personality clashes, love wins oul. It's the type of story which Spencer 'Tracy and Katharine Hepburn perfected to an art thirty or forty years ago. The performances in Hard To Hold are not in this same class, but they are agreeable: Springfield as_ the discontented rock star, and Janet Eilber as the new romance -who comes into his life, and Patti Hansen as the ex- girlfriend. Eilber in particular exhibits charm, and makes it understandable why our hero would be pursuing SIMCOE RURAL FASTBALL LEAGUE Monday, May 14 Caswell's 6 Hillsdale 0 Midland | Phelpston 0 Vase, 4 Elmvale Sports 2 Vasey Royals 6 Wyevale 4 Perkinsfield 0 Elmvale Mets 0 Thursday, May 17 Caswell's at Phelpston Elmvale Mets at Midland Wyebridge at Vasey Royals GEORGIAN BAY WOMEN'S SOFTBALL LEAGUE Wednesday, May 16 Thursday, May 17 Penetang at Port MecNicoll Midland at Sturgeon Bay in Little Lake Park, Midland 18 hole Mini-Golf Special prices for Picnics, Birthdays and large Groups Page 22, Wednesday, May 16, 1984 "a WG / sae her. Hard To Hold is the first musically oriented movie to be directed by Larry Peerce. Peegce is best known for the moving drama _ about Jill Kinmount called The Other Side of the Mountain. In Hard To Hold Peerce demon- Strales that he can handle a movie which contains much lighter material. He is aided by a Canadian born writer named Tom Hedley, who did the screenplay for Hard To Hold. Hedley previously made a reputation for himself as the writer of Flash- dance. Hard To Hold is an unexceptional but agreeably lightweight spring movie.
