New regulations for off-road vehicles All off-road vehicles must be registered with the Ministry of 'Tran- sportation and Com- munications by June 1 of this year, warns the Penetanguishene Police Chief. An off-road vehicle is defined as any two or three-wheeled vehicle, plus specific types with four or more wheels designed primarily for recreational use. Licence plates for off- road vehicles went on sale on Feb. 1 and can be obtained at any motor vehicle licensing office. 'The fee is $25. Vehicles. cannot be registered to anyone under 16 years of age. On registration, owners will be supplied with a vehicle permit and licence plate, the permit to be carried by the driver at all times. In addition, as of Aug. 1, vehicle liability in- surance will be required for all off-road vehciles driven anywhere other than land owned or occupied by the vehicle owner. Proof of in- surance must be carried by the driver. The new regulations also specify that drivers, passengers and riders on a conveyance towed by an off-road vehicle wear regulation helmets. Helmets are not required when operating on land owned or occupied by the driver. Persons under 12 are not permitted to drive an off-road vehicle except on land owned or occupied by the vehicle owner. Every person who drives one of these vehicles without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for others can now be charged with careless driving. The owner of the vehicle, as well as the driver, is responsible for violations ot the Off- Road Vehicles Act and is liable for any loss or damage to property. Legislation of these vehicles was prompted by the request of ap- proximately 160 municipalities | which were concerned for the safety of the drivers. passengers property owners. a Se and se ee a pie April 14 Ladies' Guild of St. James Church On-the- Lines, Penetanguish- ene, is holding a Send a child to camp tea, in- cluding home baking sale, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the church hall, Church Street at Cambridge Street.
