Penetang Oldtimers capture gold by -DOREEN STAINTON Penetang '"'Memories Lounge' Oldtimers skated to yet another gold medal per- formance on the weekend when they took part in the 4th Annual Kitchener Waterloo Oldtimers International Hockey Tournament along with 31 other teams. Defenceman Chuck Hatfield was the Big man, in more ways than one way, for Penetang when he popped in the winning goal at the 2:23 mark of the sudden death overtime period. A low blast from the point caught the bottom right hand corner to give an _ extausted Penetang squad the win. Place in the Super "C"' division, Penetang beat the Milton Cen tennials Oldtimers in their first game on Friday night by a score of 5-2. Larry Banks Opened the scoring midway through the first frame. Single tallies went to Jim Rooney, Ed Trudeau, Alvin Robillard and Connie Maloney. In their second game against the Port Dover Oldtimers, it was Penetang's Mike Dubeau Opening the scoring late in the second period. e Connie Maloney scored 16 seconds into the third period to give Penetang a 2-0 lead. Port Dover scored to keep things. close, however, a goal by Larry Banks put it away for Penetang. Final score was 3-1. Penetang took to the ice again four hours later to meet the Oak- ville Super 'X"' Old- timers. At this point, both teams were undefeated in the tourney. Oakville led 2-0 at the end of the first period. Connie Maloney got things going early in the second periOd 0n a super effort from team cap- tain Alvin Robillard who stole the puck at the blue line, dumping it ahead to Maloney who went in 0n a breakaway to score his second short handed goal of the tourney. Larry Banks tied it up. Oakville went ahead again by two. however, back to back goals 30 seconds apart, by Paul DeVillers gave Penetang a 4-4 tie. This game proved to be especially meaningful for Penetang's Larry Banks, a native of the Kitchener Elmira region, as his Mom and Dad were in attendance. Peewees win by KEITH ROSSEL Last Tuesday evening at the Elmvale arena, the Elmvale Dutcher and Corbett Peewees eliminated Midland from the Georgian Bay playdowns by defeating the fast-skating Midland leam by a score of 6-3. It was a wide Open game that was highlighted by Seott Kirton's four-goal performance and_ the steady netminding of the Elmvale duo of Craig Cochrane and Mike Rossel. Midland had taken a 2-0 lead in this game but Cochrane made three key saves to keep Elinvale in the game. Kirton put Elmvale ont tie board with an unassisted goal at 2:56 of the second period. At the 59 second mark, Kirton deflected a Midland pass into his Own net behind a sur- prised Mike Rossel. This unfortunate action seemed to fire up Kirton and just 11 seconds later he {ook a beautiful pass from Robby Conn and cleanly beat the Midland goaltender. The second period ended with Midland holding a 3-2 lead. Seniors Dart tournament The County of Simcoe Recreation Departm- ent, in c0-Operation with the Senior Citizens' Advisory Committee and the Barrie Get- Together Senior Citizens' Club is sponsoring the 2nd Annual County-wide Seniors' Recreational Dart Tournament. The Dart Tournament takes place On Tuesday, April 3 at the Army, Navy & Air Force Club, 7 George Street, Barrie. Invitations are ex- tended to all County In the third period Steve Dove scored a short-handed goal that was the turning point in the game. It knotted the "core and inspired the Elmvale boys. Kirton scored twice more and Jin Pottage added a single. Assists were earned on these last goals hy Conn, Scott Arener, and Todd Belanger. On Saturday in Beeton, Elmvale faced a very tough and hard working squad in the first game of the O.M.H.A. quarter-fi- als. Elmvale defeated Vecton 3-1 as a result of ai equally strong effort that seemed to put Beeton off its normal ame, Elmvale scored the first three goals of the pame, but Beeton sever pave up and continued to press into the Elmvale zone. Superlative goaltending by Mike Rossel held Beeton off the scOresheet until the last four minutes of the game. Goaltending was only one of the factors in Elmvale's victory. The defence of Shane Bywater, Jim Martin, residents 55 years Of age and Over, to enter a team composed Of one of the following com- binations: 1 woman and 3 men; 2 men and 2 Immediately follo- wing the game, Mr. Banks Sr. upheld a long standing tradition which started at the beginning of Larry's hockey career as a yOungster. Just for old times sake, and much to the delight of his teammates, Larry received a dollar from his Dad for having scored a goal in the game. Keep up the good work, son! Penetang went on to meet this same Oakville team for the Super "C" division championship game 0n Sunday in what can Only be described as a real cliff hanger. After playing three regulation 15 minute stop time periOds, the game went into a 10 minute sudden death Overtime period. Both goalies were Outstanding throughout the game, but defen- ceman Chuck Hatfield finally penetrated Oak- ville's armour with his unassisted goal to give Penetang a 1-0 victory. Penetang goalie, Gary Ronald gave us exceptional goal tending throughout the tour- nament. LU Wiais.2- JUS ea tremendous effort for Penetang, who had to play their final game without the help of two Scott Archer, and Todd Belanger played very well and cheared the puck effectively from their own zone. The lines of Steve Dove, Darren Haines, and Jamie Grant and Andy Lee, Rob Hamilton, and Michael Irvine skated hard and forechecked well to hold the Beeton teat at bay. The line of Scott Kirton, Robby Conn, and Jim Pottage played a superlative game defensively and ac- counted for all three Eimvale goals. Pottage scored from Bywater at 9:59 of the first period. Al 2:41, Conn took a pass from Kirton and scored a short-handed goal. Conn scored again in the third period on another pass from Kirton with 6:53 left to play. For Elmvale to again be successful against Beeton, if is apparent that they will have to play a similar game. The boys continue this best of five series on Friday night in Elm- vale.
