Sports Report | Randy Butineau Sports Editor call 526-2283 After three days of some of the finest Mississauga captures Ontario Schoolboy championship - representing Applewood Heights Secon- President and Chief Executive Officer for RANDY BUTINEAU The 36th Annual Ontario School Boy Curling Provincial Championships came to an exciting conclusio, on Saturday at the Midland Curling club. In a dramatic. final, Applewood Heights Second ary School of Mississauga, skipped by Gary Campbell defeated Thornlea Secondary School from Thornhill 4-2 to win the School Boy title and captured the Gore Mutual Insurance trophy. It wasn't an easy road for the Campbell rink as it came down to the final rock, in the final end, to clinch the victory. "We curled extremely well,' Campbell said after the victory. '"'We played a lot better than the first game," Campbell added. Mississauga coach Brian Canton said he was pleased with the effort by his team. "Gary called an ex- cellent game,". Canton said. "Last year, we had trouble getting out of our division, however, this year we have been on a roll. We have won seven straight games," Canton commented. "Going to that last rock, I was a little nervous," Campbell said. "When [ let go of the rock, my delivery ship before. It sure is a ood feeling," Campbell commented. "T would like to win the provincial tankard someday, however, that is in the future," the winning skip added Coach Brian Canton also expressed pleasure in his teams' victory. Host Chairperson, Edythe Clark said the tournament ran without a hitch and everyone was very cooperative. "The calibre of curling was just ex- cellent," Clark said Monday. Both Vessair's placed in the top five, in each of their races, with Gary finishing second in the- Sno-Pro Formula I and brother Bruce placed fourth track formula II race. The 10-lap race was stopped after five laps because of the poor track conditions. Gary Vessair fourth overall - "T didn't know until the fourth lap of the race that it was going to be in the single ~ only five laps," Gary Vessair said yesterday. "We had the faster lap times in the. practice runs and we jetted our engines and clutching for a 10 lap race," Gary added. "We have to take the good with the bad." Vessair felt that this year was a terrible One for him personally. 'I should havé.won a lot more races than I did," Gary commented. "However, we = are trying Out a new sled, which should benefit us On next year's circuit," he added. Bruce Vessair seventh overall Gary also said he 'would be back to race with the ski-doo racing team next season. "IT want to come back and race for the Bombomdier racing cOmpany next year. They are very good people and they stand behind you at all times," Vessair said in a phone interview from Quebec. Overall, Gary Vessair finished the season in third place with 112 points, in the Ontario Snowmobile Racing Federation standings or the OSRF. Bruce Vessair finished in ninth place with 72 points. In the International Point Standings for Sno- Pro Formula I racing, Gary finished fourth Overall with 158 points and Bruce _ placed seventh, accumulating 109 points On the season. Now that the snowmobile season is over, Gary now will turn his sights on his late model stock car racing season, When fall returns, both Gary and Bruce will begin their training and exercise programs for the upcoming snowmobile season. Major Atoms had a very. successful weekend as they took on the Collingwood Major Atoms in their playoff bid in O.M.H.A. The game played in Collingwood Saturday evening was a big win for the boys in blue to a tune Of 11-3. The game started out very even as both teams played very competitive hockey. Chris Larmand Opened the _ scoring assisted by Scott Cooper and Chris Leanard. Chris Diesveld made it 2-0 On a pass from Doug Lunnie and Chris Bales. Collingwood replied to inake it 2-1 at the end of the 1st period. Scoring Opened in the second period On a shot by Steve Graham assisted by Mike Boyd and Doug Lunnie. Again Collingwood replied to make it 3-2. Midland again scored on a beautiful pass from Craig Dempsey enabling Doug Lunnie to slam it in. replied and this left the game still in the air, It was Scott Cooper who took the un- certainty Out of the game as he stole the puck and scored unassisted to make it 5- 3. The third period was never in doubt as Midland fired in six quick goals. Mike Boyd On a pass from Chris Bales and Chris Lar- mand started it off. Then Randy Tippin on a pass from Chris Diesveld and Chris Larmand added to the insult. It was then Captain Chris Bales who capped off the night with four yOals in a row. The first was assisted by Mike Boyd and Chris Leanard and the second by Chris Leanard. The last two Chris did all by himself, the last One at the :02 second mark. The third game of the best of three out of five was played al Wasaga Beach Sunday morning. Again it was suc- cessful for the Midland Little Lake B.P. Major again beat Collingwood 6-2 10 win the series three games straight. Chris Larmand Once ayvain Opened the seOring assisted by Chris Diesveld in the second period. This was the way il stayed till the end of the second. Mike Boyd Opened the scoring in the third on a pass from Chris Lar- mand. Doug Lunnie scored assisted by Steve Graham to make it 3-0. Just when it looked safe for Midland, Collingwood tallied two quick goals to make a threat to Midland's lead. However Chris Bales came to the rescue with two quick goals both assisted by Chris Larmand and _ One assisted by Chris Leanard.
