Count PATRICIA FORGET Winterama Co-chairperson Just about now we should be heading into the winter blahs. Cheer up, Penetanguishene's annual Winterama_ is just around the corner. Feb. 17, 18, and 19 are the days to circle on your calendar for a weekend of fun. Invite your Out of town friends and start planning your Winterama weekend. As usual, the 37th annual Winterama will depend greatly on weather conditions. This year's outlook looks even better than previous years, with an abundance of snow that has already fallen. This year's weather predictions may allow Winterama events to be scheduled next to the ice area as well as many other places within Penetanguishene and surrounding area. This years' com- mittee is now in full swing, meeting every Wednesday in the council chamber and planning many ac- tivities for you to enjoy. The now traditional and every popular lumber-jack compe- tition will again be held on Saturday. Start your chainsaws and begin practising for your event. These reasonable -- priced souvenir buttons will soon be available from any Rotary member and from many local businesses. Buy one and support this 37th Winter Carnival in Penetanguishene. Another Rotary Club event is the giant parade on Saturday. This year there is a challenge to business clubs and even families to put together a parade in North Simeoe. Picture taken in Tiny Township. --Shirley Whittington, photo Stolen vehicles recovered Jan. 16 was a busy day for Penetanzuishene police, who arrested two suspects in connection with two separate in- cidents of car theft. A vehicle was stolen when its owner left the motor running while he was doing some shop- ping at the IGA. He reported if to the police, and the car was found by a patrolling officer in a ditch on Main Street. A witness at the scene reported seeing a man Grace The death occurred on Jan. 11, 1984, at Huronia District Hospital, of Victoria Harbour resident Grace Gwendolyn Webb. The Jephson Street resident, the former Grace Gillespie, was a registered nurse, trained at St. Andrew's Hospital, Midland. The Victoria Harbour: native was a registered nurse at the old St. Andrew's Hospital and at Huronia District Hospital. She was a nursing supervisor until her retirement in 1979. She worked part time for two further years. She married her husband, Fred Webb, on Oct. (25 1942;-itb# her parent's RR 1, Victoria Harbour home. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Vic- toria Harbour, and of St. John's UCW Page 8, Wednesday, Webb Her husband survives her, as do her sons Brian of Victoria Harbour and Keith of Oshawa, also her brothers John of Guelph and Gordon of RR 1, Victoria Harbour. There is a granddaughter, Carolyn. Her parents, Johu and = Elizabeth Gillespie, predeceased her. Rev. Wesley Oake and Rev. Gordon Nodwell officiated at the funeral service held in Nicholls Funeral Home on Jan. 14. Interment in Vic- toria Harbour Union Cemetery. January 18, 1984 in- ~ with a suitcase running toward the bus station. Police set up road- blocks in Elmvale, and stopped several busses. A suspect was ap- prehended and charged in Penetanguishene. Charged with theft over $200, possession of stolen poods over $200, care and control of a motor vehicle, refusing to give breath samples and driving while under suspension was Kevin Marshall Monague, 19, of a Toronto address. In a separate incident, a vehicle which was reported stolen' in Welland, Ontario was spotted behind a Penetanguishene ad- dress by a local police. They staked out the premises and arrested a man who was charged with possession of the stolen vehicle. He was transferred to the custody of Niagara Regional police, on an outstanding bench warrant for theft of a vehicle. To place your entry in the parade you may call Peter Shirriff, or Gerry Light, as well as any of the Rotarians. The Maple Valley Club is sponsoring another one of its fan- tastic 'kick off' dances on Friday night with a live band. The Saturday agenda is full of talent and fun for everyone, with a talent contest in the afternoon and evening, as well as a dance featuring a live band to wind up a great day of activity. Watch this column for more details of events at the Maple Valley Club, or call the club for more details. CKMP is_ sponsoring The Great Bed Race this year. This event is planned for Saturday morning prior to the parade. CKMP"s disc jockeys are already starting plans for their entry and construction of their bed. Anyone wishing to enter this' new event, please contact Scott Warnock at CKMP for further details regarding rules and regulations for the bed race. The Penetang Legion again will sponsor its famous bean supper Friday night. On Saturday, the Legion promises two pea soup wagons for your eating pleasure, and a festive time in the Normandy room in the afternoon as well as evening, with a live band. The Legion's Ladies Auxiliary will again sponsor a craft and bake sale on Saturday from 11_a.m. tO 4 p.m. in All Saints Hall. ; Le Centre d'activites francaises continues its tradition with its Restaurant Chez Nous Open to visitors on Saturday. The lumber- jack competition will prove to be a great crowd pleaser. Rumour has it that Bonhomme_ Carnival will be sporting a new suit this year. The Arena Parks and Recreation Committee is planning a gala Saturday night dance in its newly renovated roo. The first draw will take place that evening. The major Atom hockey tour- nament already has 11 teains registered for events to be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Penetanguishene Arena. Some of these hockey clubs come from quite a distance to join in the fun of Winterama. As yOu can see, Winterama '84 promises to be an even better and bigger weekend than in previous years.
