meets a mene Howard rink captures Tankard title The Provincial Curling title is within the grasp of the Russ Howard rink, curling oul of the Midland Curling Club. ThesHoward rink won its three games played at the Labatts Tankard in Simcoe, Ont., to advance to the Provincial Champio- nships to be held in Peterborough, on Feb. 8-12. The local rink defeated teams from Milton, St. Cafherines and Delhi to advance. The local rink consists of Russ Howard, skip; brother Glen at vice; Larry Merkley, second stone, and Kent Car- stairs at lead. Howard felt the rink "curled really well, but found the competition tougher"? than he an- ticipated. "We curled better than we did last year, however, the teams were much stronger," Howard said Monday. "Glen handled the pressure really well and both Larry and Kent are curling exceptionally well," he added. "There is no real pressure On us at the provincials, but we must have a good start. We'll take it gaine by vame. On any given day anyone could win the title.' Howard com- mented. Howard also said that preparation for each team is very im- portant. "We'll be able to really psyche up for a game against Ed Warnick, but we must have that mental preparation for all the rinks."' The team is the Midland Juveniles and they have just won their third tourney of the season! The juveniles travelled to Fenlon Falls where they par- ticipated and won the championship, fielding a team of only 12 players as a result of injuries and work committments. Two of the players were goaltenders. In Midland's first game Of the tournament they lost to a very strong 'team from Etobicoke 8-3. Midland goal scorers were Peter Quilty with two goals and brother Owen netted the other mark, Their second game was against Lindsay where they triumphed with a 5-3 victory. Mark Degagne led the way for Midland with the - hat-trick with singles going to Tom Hook and Owen Quilty. Richmond Hill were the next Opponents to. fall at the hands of the Midland juveniles. Midland won the game 5-3, after trailing at.one point in the game 3-1. Scoring for Midland were Peter and Owen Quilty, Steve Charlebois, Mark Degagne and Steven Bisson. With the..win over Richmond Hill, it put Midland in the cham- pionship- game against the same Etobicoke team that soundly-beat thei 8-3 in their opening game of the tourney. Midland turned the tables and won _ the game 4-1. Midland took a 2-1 first period lead. Mark Degagne scored at 9:07, froin Charlebois and Jim Edgar. Etobicoke tied the seore less than two minutes later, however, Midland struck again, with only 1:09 remaining in the first frame. Peter Quilty scored the mark with brother Owen assisting.
