Brian Orser: Just starting to reach the pinnacle of his career Midland major atoms shut-out Penetang 12-0 The Little Lake B.P. Major Atoms made a very decisive victory this past Saturday night by blanking the Penetang squad 12-0. Midland made their intentions clear right at the 13 second mark of the opening period with a goal from Scott Cooper assisted by Sean Lavin and Mike Boyd. Less than 30 seconds passed when Scott Orser captures Challenge Cup RANDY es Citizen-Times Sports Brian Orser, of Penetanguishene, moved one step closer to improving his chances of winning a gold medal, at next year's Winter Olympics, in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. Orser won both the short and long program, at the Ennia Challenge Cup, held in Holland, last weekend. The Ennia Cup comp- etition is considered a major step toward the Olympics. According to Brian's sister, Mary Kaye, Brian performed his best short and long program ever. "His long program was even better than the one he performed at Skate Canada," said Mary Kaye. Orser impressed the judges at the Ennia Cup, scoring seven 5.9's. No other competitor registered such a score. Orser easily out- pointed the other 21 competitors, to capture the gold medal. Brian is now going to stay in Europe and skate at the Canadian National teams' training zone, in Munhiem, West Ger- many. While at the training site, Orser will be ad- ding more routines to his long program. Granada Toros win ""C" division final Rookie touch football team, the Granada Toros were helped by "Jady luck"' in their 8-1 victory, on Sunday, Nov. 13, over the U- Bag-It Raiders in the .Midland-Penetang Touch Football league. Traction was surpr- singly good on the snow- Cooper scored assisted by Sean Lavin and Steve Graham. Scoring was rounded out in the first frame by Craig Demp- Oldtimers' participate in Shoot-outs by DOREEN STAINTON The Penetang "Memories" Oldtimers participated in the 1st Annual Bracebridge Model T's Oldtimers' Hockey tournament this past week-end. It proved to be a SHOOT-OUT NIGHT- MARE, as all of Penetang's 3 games had to be decided in this manner. In their first game at 10:15 p.m, Friday night, Penetang defeated the Orangeville Old Boys, 6 to 5. Alvin Robillard proved to be the big man on the ice, scoring 2 goals and picking up 3 assists, with the second goal winning it in the shoot-out. Other goals were scored by John Dubeau, Fred (Al) Patterson, Conrad Maloney, and Rick (Ace)) Anderson, Alvin Robillard was picked as the game's M.V.P., while Gary Ronald was selected the most valuable goalie. On Saturday, Penetang beat out A's win consolation The Second Annual Gravenhurst Hockey Tournament was held last weekend and the Midland Athletics, tournament team came away looking quite impressive. In their first round of play, the A's lost to their Opponents, the Parry Sound Selects 5-4 in overtime. Paul Robillard was named the MVP player of that game. By losing their first game the A's were placed in the Con- solation round. Bradford Brewers were their next challengers. Against this team they showed how promising they could be. Bill Arbour with two goals to his credit, led the team to a_ 6-2 victory. Wayne King was chosen MVP of the game. Bob Smith was daz- zling in their next game, as he only let in one goal for the 5-1 win over Alliston. Both teams were quite competitive, however the Midland team took the lead and never looked back. Ross Cousineau was named the MVP player of this game. In the Consolation game, the Midland A's took on the London Western Grads. The A's showed their spirit and capabilities with a 6-0 win Over London. All members of the team showed their abilities offensively and defensively. Bob Smith who was outstanding throughout the tour- nament was named MVP of the game. Huntsville 8-6. Alvin Robillard scored a hat trick. Larry Leroux had 2 and Brian Merkley counted one. In the deciding shoot-out, it was Conrad Maloney & Chuck Hatfield putting the icing on the cake to Bievies SP ein eitvan ¢g. ""Memories" a_ well earned victory. Conrad Maloney was voted M.V.P. and_ goalie Gary Ronald received his second nomination as most valuable goalie. Penetang "Memor- ies" went on to meet the Brule Hawks Oldtimers from Penetang on Sunday. The Brule Hawks led 3-0 after one period on goals by Jim Vaillancourt (2) and Ken Knapton(1). However, Penetang "Memories" came back in the second period to tie it up on goals by Conrad Maloney, Fred Patterson and Alvin Robillard. In the resulting shoot-out, Brule Hawks' goalie, Dave Sarson did not allow any goals, while at the other end, Ken Knapton and Keith Bath were able to score on "'Memories" goalie Gary Ronald. The lads were kept busy off the ice as well. On Sat. a table hockey tournament was held in the arena lounge and 5 of our boys came away winners. They were Bill Lacroix, John Dubeau, Fred Patterson, Rick Anderson and Gerald Gignac. The Tour- nament Comittee presented each one with a bottle of wine. The ladies were not to be outdone however, as Helen Lacroix's ticket was drawn for a $50.00 grocery hamper at the dance on Saturday night. All in all, a good time was had by ll. Bracebridge can be very proud of this, their first ever, very suc- cessful tournament. Oro at Penetang pionships at MSS covered field, but cold hands and a slippery ball were a factor. The Toros marched steadily down the field in the second quarter, their confidence bolstered by an ankle injury to Raider rusher Lennie. The final blow came from Randy Tippin in the dying seconds of the game assisted by Chris Diesveld and Steve Graham. The Little Lake B.P. Major Atoms have yet to lose a game in their regular and exhibition games and have only allowed 6 goals. This is only due to the fine goaltending of Terry Waltenbury and Jason Nicoll with help from the strong defense and great defensive back- checking of the for- wards. The B:P.
