er eS ee, HNN -- 'Wiae: bea La -INSIDE OUR [F]OSPITAL Health Care in Ontario has become the object of intense public and media scrutiny in the past few years. From the mysterious deaths of infants at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, to deaths of patients in nursing homes; from the abortion issue, to hospital budget cuts and extra-billing; the issue of patient's rights is prompting questions, not only from the public, but from health care professionals as well. To address these questions, Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, Barrie Campus, is offering a one-day seminar on Saturday, Nov. 5, called '"'The Health Professional and the Law"' The seminar will focus on the following areas: the basis of law, patient's rights and the new Constitution, standards of care and negligence, consent to treatment, con- fidentiality and access to health records, the responsibility of the health institution for the acts of its employees, and the incompetent health professional. Keynote speakers are two of Canada's preeminent experts on the subject of health and law. Lorne Elkin Rozovsky, a native of Timmins, Ontario, is a Halifax lawyer and an adjunct assistant professor in law and medicine at Dalhousie University. He is the author of 'Canadian Hospital Rights". Fay Adrienne Rozovsky is assistant professor in health administration at Dalhousie University, holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard, where she is also a guest lecturer. Mr. and Mrs. Rozovsky are co-authors of the book "Legal Sex" and write regularly for several Canadian medical journals. At the completion of the seminar, par- ticipants will be able to identify the rights of patients as consumers of health care, as well as be aware of the rights and duties of health professionals and hospitals in the provision of that care. The entire spectrum of health care per- formative. The registration fee of $55 includes refresh- ments, a buffet lunch, and the text--"The Canadian Patient's Book of Rights', and should be mailed to Georgian College Con- tinuing Education, Employer Services, One Georgian Drive, Barrie, Ontario L4M 3X9. Deadline for registration to 'The Health Professional and the Law"' is October 28th. The seminar will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 in the Georgian College Theatre, at the Barrie Campus.
