The spring and summer of 1983 are an indicator of the trent- Severn Waterways success in trying to keep things "normal"' despite widely varying weather conditions. In May, when 187.2 mm or 225 per cent of the normal amount of rain fell on the reservoir area, some flooding occurred, but the average amount of storage was 107 per cent, only 10 per cent higher than the normal 97 per cent. A two-woman national calibre demonstration team spent 45 minutes leaching both boys and girls specific formations and strategies. They quickly learned that the participants were more advanced and already knew basic skills. Unfortunately the session did not last as long as everyone had hoped but as many new strategies as possible were taught in the time allowed. The summer of 1983 will be remembered as one Of almost perfect summer weather - and also one of water problems for many people. The Trent- Severn Waterway must constantly balance the demand for water from the reservoirs with the realization that the coltagers, residents and businesses on those reservoirs would also like to use the same water. The people using the reservoirs, while enjoying the fine weather, endured the problems caused by much lower than average water levels. Many towns and villages, especially those along the Trent River, from Hastings to Trenton have suffered with water having a definite ""swampy'"' taste and odour, caused by the low flows and hot weather producing higher than normal amounts of algae. One group who should benefit from the low water levels are fishermen who go after take trout, which spawn in the fall, often on very shallow gravel bars. In past years, the Trent- Severn Waterway lowered the reservoirs having lake _ trout populations to winter level by October ist, to prevent trout spawn being left high and dry by receeding water levels. In recent years, due to the increased use of the lakes by cottagers up till Thanksgiving weekend, the lakes are kept as high as possible till about the middle of October, then any surplus water is run off as quickly as possible. Many times this draw off has coincided with the spawning period, and many eggs were $10.50 from Penetang *10.00 from Midland 8.00 from Elmvale Senior Citizens 10% off Daily Bus Service to and from TORONTO COMPARE AND SAVE WITH PIVICL YOUR BEST TRAVEL BARGAIN lost. This year, because of the fact that many lakes are already near their winter levels, it is expected that little lake trout spawn will be lost. This summer has also been a busy one on the canal system. Because of wet weather in May, 5,000 fewer vessels moved through the locks and bridges. The rest of the summer was very busy, however, with 231,700 vessels being locked through, an increase of 10,00 over 1982. The busiest locks were at Fenelon Falls and Rosedale which moved approximately 12,000 boats each this season. Navigation through the locks ended Wed- nesday, October 12. Now a busy season of maintenance and reconstruction begins. "LEN" says isn't it time you considered a Trade! 1983 Cavalier Convertible white with blue interior. Fully Loaded.
