Dr. Thomas collected $514 in pledges in a July Bike-A-Thon to support Wheelchair sports in this area. Summer bike-a-thon helps to establish wheelchair basketball league Tiny-Tay Freewhe- elers held a bike-a-thon on July 24 to support wheelchair sports in our area. A total of 20 riders completed the 16 mile route to raise $2,200. Special commend- ations go to Dr. Richard Thomas for collecting the highest amount of pledges - $514. Dr. Thomas would like to thank the staff of the Huronia District Hospital for their in- dividual support. Another rider, Andy Lenoi was One of the yongest and- definitely the quickest. Andy completed the course in 65 minutes, An exceptional rider was Patty Meuller who managed the 16 miles on a 1955 balloon-tired no speed bike with a wicker basket. The effort of everyone involved is very much appreciated by the Freewheelers and we look forward to the continued support during the first season. Now, a wheelchair basketball league consisting of four teams (one from the townships of Tiny and Tay, two teams from the city of Barrie and one team from the Newmarket area) has been established as the North Central Ontario Wheelchair Basketball League. The star players from these teams will form to make up the Simcoe County Chariots who will be involved in The Southern Ontario Wheelchair Basketball League. The Tiny-Tay Freewheelers _ started last year with three disabled players and an exhibition game against Barrie. Ken Maheu, ~ the Freewheelers' Manager said, ""'We now have a new and _ promising team with a total of seven disabled players. Most of-the rules in wheelchair basketball are the same and we do not lower the baskets. Wheelchair basketball allows abled-bodied people to participate in a team sport with the disabled. We _ have developed an en- thusiastic spirit and hope to do well in the league."' The Freewheelers are presently busy assembling' sports chairs from used parts donated by the Work- men's Compensation Board and Therepy Supply in Toronto. The funds raised in the bike- a-thon are to purchase repair material and special modified parts. The first game is Oct. 20, at the Penetanguishene . Secondary School against Newmarket. Warm-ups start at 6:30 and game time is 7:00 p.m. The Freewheelers welcome everyone to support their new home team and experience an exciting sport. WANTED! Your Business The Refinishing House.
