These kits were prepared from original materials in the Simcoe County Archives. Anyone interested in Simcoe County History should attend the meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Simcoe County Museum. Please note the change of night. Terry Fox runners Thirty-seven Corpus Christi School students, from grades as low as Grade 2 and 3, each ran between five kiometres and 10 kilometres on Tuesday during the Penetanguishene school's first Terry Fox Run. Many of the students completed the 10 kilometre run around the course on the school property. Even the youngest runners completed at least half of the distance. An estimated $650 to $700 is expected to be collected. In a directive sent to every OPP detach- ment, OPP Commissioner James Erskine pointed out that the proper use of seat belts has a direct relationship to the seriousness of injuries received in accidents. He told OPP officers that enforcement of the laws demanding occupants of a vehicle wear seat belts has great potential for reducing deaths and injuries in traffic ac- cidents. motor vehicle and any passengers 16 years and over may be charged if they do not use a proper seat belt assembly. The driver is also responsible for making sure that anyone in the vehicle above the age of two and under 16 years wears the proper restraining devices. Studies conducted in Ontario have found OPP increasing enforcement of seat belt law that the number of people wearing seat belts has declined drastically. After their use was made mandatory in 1976, the usage rate was 76 per cent. More recent studies by Transport Canada have shown that the present rate is about 49 per cent, a reduction of 27 percentage points. "There are two ways Of getting more people to wear seat belts,'? said Commissioner Erskine, "they are enforcement and education. The OPP officers on traffic patrol will be increasingly vigilant in laying charges for these infractions. "The education side of the issue will be addressed by OPP Community Services Officers. The officers will emphasize the use of seat belts whenever they talk to community and school groups through the province'. Soap box racer, P3 Tourism, impact of Papal visit to highlight HTA agenda Tourism and _ the impact of special 1984 events such as the Papal Visit, Hot Air Balloon Championships' and Bicentennial Celebr- ations will be featured at the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Huronia Tourist Association. Next year will see the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland. The event is expected to be the single largest event in the history of Huronia and the Tourist Association will be hearing first hand what can be ex- pected. Monsignor Dennis Murphy, Secretary General of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, will be thie keynote speaker climaxing a day of in- formation and seminars at the Huronia Tourist Association's Annual Meeting. Monsignor Murphy is the man in charge of the Pope'sk Visit to Canada. The meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 28 at Bayview-Wildwood } Resorts in Port Stanton, just north of Orillia. The Huronia Tourist Association developes and promotes tourism throughout the County of Simcoe and the Cities of Orillia and Barrie. It is supported by private businesses and_ the municipal governments of Barrie, Orillia and the Couty of Simcoe. The Annual Meeting is attended by members of the Association, prospective members and anyone concerned about tourism in this region. The meeting will feature seminars on various events and programs including the details of the Canadian Hot Air Balloon Cham- pionships being held in Barrie in July of 1984. The ballooning event is expected to attract 80 of North America's Balloonists and_ at- tendance of over 250,000 spectators during the course of the week. Huronia organizors of Ontario's Bicentennial Celebrations will be making a presentation on the host of special events, celebrations and festivals sponsored by community -- groups, volunteer organizations and numerous municipalities --_ throu- "ghout Huronia. Also featured at the seminars, which get underway at 2:30 p.m., will be 1984 presen- tations by the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation, the Marketing plans of 'reserve Georgian Lakelands Travel Association and the unveiling of a new 1984 Marketing Plan for the Huronia Tourist Association.
