Sports Report Penetang Bantams make' Ont. finals in ball hockey by DAVID GRAVELLE The Penetang, Bantam All-Star team sponsored by Stewart's Gulf Oilers were finalists at the Ontario Minor Ball Hockey Championships held in Toronto last weekend. The Penetang team under coach David McConkey played ex- tremely good ball hockey to capture their first two victories. They ° defeated Oshawa 4-3 with Chris Moreau notching two and Peter Lalonde and Dave Bressette with singles. Against Orillia, Penetang won again with a score of 3-2. In the finals against undefeated: East Gwillimbury, the Bantams could not get any breaks as they went down to defeat 5-2. In the second and deciding game, Penetang played much better but could not put the ball into the net. Final score was 4-3. It must be stated that the maturity and sportsmanship the bantams displayed was a tribute to the coaching staff. The players were told to stay cool and let their opponents take the penalties. The class the players showed made all the Penetang sup- porters proud. Here is a list of players who should be commended for their play. Todd Laurin, Tigne Ross, Peter Lalonde, Pat Marchand, Rob Fortin, Gary Asselin, Dave Bressette, Wayne Desjardins, Shawn Fisher, Tim Dion, Chris Moreau, Blain Dusome, Kevin Dumais, Gary Duval. Allan Geere, David McConkey (coach), and David Gravelle (Manager). For their efforts the players received tournament _ pennants and silver medals. In the Junior Division, Penetang was eliminated early but only after playing some good ball hockey. In their first game against the Scarborough Flames (the eventual tournament champs) Penetang's_ inexperi- ence showed through as they were totally out hustled and outpassed. The final score was 8-4. Against an Oshawa team, the Juniors were very unlucky. They could not put the ball between the pipes. Juniors fell behind early 2-0 but fought back. With the score 4-3 for Oshawa and only six seconds remaining Penetang called a time out. With centerman Jeff Leclair taking the faceoff and Perry Beausoleil at the point the tandem .worked perfectly as Beausoleil scored with only 2 seconds remaining on the clock. ; This climactic event turned sour as Oshawa scored the winner only 16 seconds into over- time. Although the junior team did not Kings still seek coach Does anyone know where Peter Dubeau can find a coach for the Penetang Junior C Kings? Dubeau_ has been actively seeking a replacement for Ron Marchildon, who resigned for personal and family reasons last month. It seems the right combination of experience, eagerness, and willingness to work have not been found in any one candidate. There are rumours that some people have been interviewed for the enviable job of coaching the Kings, but there are no indications that the position of coach of the Penetang Junior C hockey team has been offered to any of the interviewees. Meanwhile, the Kings have added a new face to their management staff. Shawn Stewart, formerly the manager of the now defunct Midland A's intermediate team, is now learning the ropes of management under Peter Dubeau's watchful eye. Dubeau says, "You very rarely find a person Shawn's age who wants to get into the management end of sports. When you find someone in his early twenties, who is as eager to learn as he is, you obviously take advantage of it." The acquisition of Shawn Stewart for the Kings should help the already well-oiled organization run even smoother. This should make the new coach's job even easier. Now, if they could only find someone to take this easy job! reach the finals they must be credited for staying overnight and cheering their younger bantam team into the finals. The saying 'Wait 'til next year'? may be a touch old, but it is definitely pertinent to the junior team. The players are all young juniors; which means they will be of junior age next year. Therefore all they can do is improve. For making last weekend a success the coaches must be thanked as well as the players; however there is a group of people who plinte sometimes overlooked. They are the parents who sacrificed their weekend to drive their kids and cheer on all of our teams. Tournament Notes: In the showdown competition that took place before the first game, two Penetang players did extremely well. Tim Dion and Dave Bressette finished second and _ third respectively, for their efforts they received a Titan hockey stick anda roll of tape. This coming weekend in Toronto the S. Charlebois Diggers will be participating in the Provincial Ball Hockey Championships. They earned this by dethroning Ron's Confectionary a couple of weekends ago. Good Luck Diggers!
