Ont. Ball Hockey Championships Diggers all set for the weekend! The Ontario Ball Hockey Championships are set to get under way this weekend in Streetsville and Mississauga. S. Charlebois Haulage and Excavating Diggers will be representing the Penetang-Midland Ball Hockey League. There are three divisions, each made up of four teams, each a different regional ball hockey champion. The Diggers are in Division One with the Weston Wildcats, Toronto champions, plus the champs from the Ottawa and Sarnia leagues. Division two is made up of teams from London, Windsor, Lambton, and Metro Toronto, Division Three teams are from Oshawa, Mississauga, Ancaster, and Mooretown. Games will be played this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at either the Streetsville Vic Johnson Community Centre or the Mississauga Valley Arena. The top team in each division after the round- robin play, plus the top overall second-place team, will advance to the semi-finals. Teams get two points for a win, one point for a tie, and one point for each period they won in the game. So if a team defeated its opponent and outscored them in each period of the game, they would receive four points. Jeff Bales returns from "Cornhusker Country' by Ron Johnson Jeff Bales' trip to Lincoln, Nebraska turned out to be a highly enjoyable, and most successful venture. Bales was part of the Ontario contingent that travelled to the American Midwest to take part in the annual Nebraska-Ontario challenge petition. The eight-member Ontario golf com- team left Toronto on United Airlines on Aug. 13, and flew, via Chicago, Illinois and Des Moines, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska. These eight boys, who qualified at the recent Ontario Junior Golf Championships at Midland Golf and Country Club, were aged 15 and 16, and came from all over the province; from Sarnia to Thunder Bay. Jeff Bales season. practice this week. Men's basketball tryouts tomorrow The local entries in the Simcoe County Intermediate Men's Basketball League are about to begin training camp for the 1983-84 Tryouts for the Commodore Hotel and Dock Lunch teams start tomorrow night (Thur- sday) at 7 p.m. at MSS and will run each Thursday night until the start of the season. There are several openings on both teams due to retirements, so team Organizers are hoping to see some new faces Out to the first There will be two local teams if enough bodies come out to fill the uniforms. Games this season, home games at least, will be played on Thursday evenings at Midland Secondary School. This made a true "All Ontario'? team ac- cording to Bales. Ontario won the two- day competition very easily. In a complex scoring set-up featuring the Nassua system, two- man best ball and in- dividual contests, the score was 39!» to 812 for Ontario. Our Midland representative shot a practice round of 79, before really coming through with fine rounds of 77, 76, and 76 in the actual contests. He took all three points from his Opponents in head-to- head play. In a golfing contest where each hole con- tributes to the team's score, it adds a different element to the game. "You really have to attack each hole and try for birdies. You're not just playing your own game, against the course, you're playing 18 separate little games," explained Bales. This is the end of O'n tar 1.0 Golf Association play for Bales this year, and he has jad. a very profitable and com- petitive year. His regular education, as well as his golf game, have benefitted from the summer of 1983. . 'I've played fairly well all summer, and this Nebraska tourney was a good finish to my golf season. Just being around the competition down there helped my game," said Bales. He also learned much about the American sport ethic while in Cornhusker country. The Ontario team toured the University of Nebraska, and got a firsthand taste of major college sports area. "Everything is Cornhusker Crazy down there. The whole region is ready and waiting for the football season at the university,' ex- plained Bales. The exposure to big- time American college sports may also have exposed Jeff Bales to a scoul from a_ college where he might be in line for a scholarship in the U.S., although he is still a couple of years away from making that kind of decision. Never too early to start looking though! @ Warning! The Chinch Bug It is an insect that if left untreated can do devastating damage to your lawn. The Weed Man is seeing damage being done already. If your lawn is starting to turn brown in areas it could be the pesty Chinch Bug is starting to show its damaging effect. Jeff Bales would like to add his thanks to all the members of Midland Golf and Country Club for their assistance, both financially and inspirationally, for his trip to Nebraska as part of the Ontario team. in the; t's a hoot! 133 picture perfect playgrounds for you to discover.
