Twelve of 20 Tiny Township property owners located near the dump in the township who applied for a reduction in the assessed value of their property have been granted reductions in assessment ranging from $650 to $189, says county assessment commissioner Bruce Fraser. About 300 applications for a reduction in assessment were heard in the last week by an assessment review board meeting in the Tiny Township municipal building. Twenty applications were based on proximity to the dump outside Perkinsfield and proximity to or ownership of con- taminated wells. The dozen approved applications were submitted by the three property owners whose wells have been declared contaminated by the Ministry of the Environment, and property owners who are near these property owners, and the dump which is the source of the contamination in the three wells. An application from a person with property on Georgian Bay who wanted a reduction because of the spread of contaminating liquids from the dump was turned down because of the distance between the dump and the property, Fraser said. About 20 people applied for a reduction for reasons relating to the dump. The assessment board granted a total reduction of assessment in the 12 cases of $3,511, Fraser said. There are 14,000 properties in the township, the assessment com- missioner said. It is normal for two to three per cent of the property owners to appeal their assessment, he said Assessments are reviewed annually. The highest reduction, $650, was on an assessment of $10,725, Fraser said.
