ag te Even though the air was a mite nippy on Sunday morning, the dedicated early bird golfers thought it was warm enough to play a few holes at Midland Golf and Country Club. This budding Jack Nicklaus was one of a four-some teeing off on Number One at MGCC. They seemed to be divided on which direction to hit the ball. Their shots all went different ways! Boy! What a great week for pitchers in both major leagues. First, Milt Wilcox of Detroit' Tigers had a perfect game for eight and two- thirds innings against the White Sox before losing his no-hitter to Jerry Hairston's pinch- . hit single in the ninth...Saturday, Montreal pitcher Charlie Lea, who pitched a no-hitter against the Giants in 1981, lost his no-hit bid against Houston when Canadian Terry Puhl pinch-hit a single to right in the eighth in- -ning...Charlie Lea was born in Paris, France, although we doubt that had anything to do with his pitching performance...Finally Sunday, San Francisco Giant pitcher Atlee Hammaker (Great name!) set down the first 21 Cincinnati Reds before Johnny Bench singled...Pascuel Perez who last year couldn't find his way to Atlanta Stadium, finds himself this year with a 3-0 record, having given up only one earned run in three starts...Atlanta's team ERA going into the weekend was under 2.00 runs per game...Blue Jays were second to Texas in team ERA in the A.L....George Brett had three doubles on Sunday against Milwaukee and was hitting 423 on Friday...Reggie Jackson has _ hit homers in three straight games as of Monday night...ex-Expo Andre Thornton of Cleveland hada terrible spring camp but is second in the league in rbi's...Who needs training camp?... Nolan Ryan will become the all-time strikeout king this week when he passes Walter Johnson's mark of 3,508 K's...He needs 7 to tie...Well see you next week. Summer small game tag no longer required If you're hunting for small game in southern Ontario this summer, you wont need a resident's summer small game tag. "IT am pleased to inform resident hunters that the validity date on their licence to hunt small game has been extended to cover the period between April 1 and August 31,"' Natural Resources Minister Alan Pope said. "This is applicable to the Southern Region of the province only." Hunters planning to hunt only during the summer will _ still require a small game licence but will not have to purchase an ad- ditional summer tag as in the past. ARC floor hockey Midland ARC floor hockey team qualified for the provincial Special Olympics finals in May by coming second in the Tri- Regional Tournament last weekend in Corn- wall. Midland got off to a bad start at the tourney, losing the opening game to Cornwall Kinsmen by a score of 5-3. This was despite the fine three- goal performance of Perry Stewart. Game _ two _ pitted Midland against John Vanier also of Cornwall. Midland ended up on the long end of the same 5-3 score as the opener. Dennis Fournier had three goals in this one, and two ladies, Louise Dignard and Brenda Pilon netted the other two. Midland's final game of the tournament was against John Vanier again. This time Midland shut them out 4-0. Lighting *the goal light in this match were Perry Stewart, Dennis Fournier, Cindy Cruise, and Jim Maheu each with a single goal. The two wins and one loss put Midland in second place and allows them to go on to Thunder Bay and the Ontario championships, representing Region Six. Provincial tour- nament is slated for the weekend of May 13, 14, and 15. Pen Juveniles do well in Ottawa Penetanguishene Sabin Charlebois Haulage Juvenile hockey team travelled to Ottawa over the weekend to take part in the Tom Brown Tour- nament. In their first game Saturday morning, Penetang lost a heart- breaker to Ottawa Pinecrest. Trailing 3-0 in the last period, Sabin Charle- bois rallied for two goals, and had an ap- parent equalizer disallowed for a high stick infraction. Penetang goal scorers were John O'Hara, assisted by Jeff LeClair and Perry Beausoleil, and Dave. Genier, assisted by Jerome Ladouceur and Scott Hook. John O'Hara was named the game's MVP. Saturday evening, Penetanguishene took on Ottawa Uplands, and came back from a 2-0 deficit to eke out a 3-2 win in triple overtime. O'Hara started the comeback with his second goal of the tourney, assisted by Genier and Henry Marchildon. Jerome Ladouceur tied it up with an _ unassisted marker. Both goals came in the third period, sending the He ee.
