: if H \ 4 Our NSSLC should be model by Murray Moore The rest of Simcoe County should model its garbage disposal committees on _ this area's North Simcoe Sanitary Landfill Committee, Simcoe County council was told yesterday. A committee com- missioned by the council to study waste management in the county concluded that the county should be divided into five areas. All of the municipalities in each area_ should combine their money and send their garbage to one site. The former Midland- Penetanguishene-Tiny Township dump com- mittee has expanded to include Tay Township, and the villages of Port MeWNicoll and Victoria Harbeur. The gommittee also advised against the county setting up a central waste management site that would cost millions of dollars.. In his idea, garbage would be taken to area transfer stations and then trucked to the county's central dump. Incineration is not feasible at the present, costing five times as much as landfilling, the committee reported. Some money could be recouped if steam were produced and sold, but Barrie would be the only place where steam could possibly be sold, the committee con- cluded. The committee recommends the county be divided into the following areas for the purposes of -- con- solidating garbage disposal: Alliston, Barrie, Collingwood, Midland, and Orillia. The committee said that landfilling was the best way to dispose of gar- bage in Simcoe County for the next 20 years. The cost to Midland of incinerating its garbage would jump to $400,000 a year from _ $80,000, Percy Ehler, a member of the committee, said yesterday.
