Happy Easter! The Easter Bunny was busy last customers at the bank. Here, Robyn Thursday visiting the Bank of Com- Craig, aged two and a half, reaches merce on King Street in Midland. That's how many calls have come in to Telecare Midland in the two years since the centre opened on March 29, 1981. Each one of those calls represents some concern, some person trying to cope with the stresses of his or her life, 'and reaching out, to another caring individual. Some of those callers were so desperate, that the only solution they could think of, was suicide. Others just wanted to chat and lift a little of their loneliness. Every range of human emotion has found expression. Each caller has discovered a cheery voice, a caring anonymous friend. Usually the outcome has been some measure of comfort or assistance for the caller. Occasionally, that call has been the first step on the way to wholeness, for a hurting individual. That's really what Telecare is all about--being there to listen and care and help. If only a few of those 2073 callers found the warmth and caring they needed, it has been all very worthwhile. Each Telecare volunteer is required to complete a 50 hour training program before taking on the responsibility of answering the phone. On completion of the training process, Telecare workers take turns manning the phones to provide round-the-clock availability to anyone who calls. There is, of course, no charge for the services Telecare provides. Funds for the continuing operation come from donations made by individuals, churches and businesses.
