ee ee Se ee Outdoors by Brian Berriault MNR to Boost Rainbow Trout Ministry of Natural Resources will be at- tempting to give a shot in the arm to our rainbow trout population. This spring MNR will be out in force at_the Ganaraska River and Bothwell Creek hoping to collect almost three quarter million eggs for hatching purposes. Why wild stock? Well, MNR feel wild rainbow trout will survive better in a natural environment yielding more fish because of less mortality among young. Of the 700,000 eggs slated for the hatchery the ministry is expecting a release in the neighbourhood of 400,000. Although this new found stock is for southern Ontario no specific areas were named. I would bet on Owen Sound and possibly Lake Ontario. Eggs will be hatched at the Normandale hatchery which will get a few improvements to take better care of the new hatchlings. Spring Break Anglers will have to take a break from fishing walleye and pike in Georgian Bay. As of March 15, these two species are out of bounds for Georgian Bay anglers. There are a few other areas such as Lake Scugog which also close on this date for walleye. So, if you plan to travel, check for seasons. MNR is looking to the closed season in Georgian Bay to increase spawning numbers. Over the years there has been a definite decline in our pike and walleye population. High Expectations With the closed season on walleye over the years and work on spawning grounds at Port Severn a few years back, the Ministry of Natural Resources is looking for a rise in the number of spawning walleye. Fish from the first year's spawning should be making an appearance on the grounds this year. The Ministry is looking to the improvements of the spawning beds to give a much higher hatch rate. Well, this year could be the start of something big. If successful, more fish shouid return in the future. However, it will be a toss- up as to whether the closed season in Georgian Bay did the trick or the new spawning habitat. Yours For the Asking Breck's Products Inc. has its Fishing Guide out for '83. It includes anything you wanted to know about using a Mepps as well as many other baits put out by Breck's. One of their new products is the Nils Master, but once fishermen lay eyes on it it will rank right up there with the Mepps. For those who lose a boat or two each year because of knots, Brecks has a new item on the market that will be of interest to you. Its called the Gripper. It can be used instead of a knot on any rope. Boaters may want to havea look at this. Just mention the column or paper on a postcard to Breck's Products Inc. P O box 604, Sherbrooke, Quebec, J1H 5K5 and Brecks will forward you a copy. Ring in Spring Who could think of spring without thinking of the Toronto Sportsmen's Show? Each year thousands of sportsmen head for the show and rightly so. If there is anything new on the market its there. Dog Trials, fishing tackle, boats and a raft of other outdoor related equipment is there. So why not take in this year's Toronto Sportsmen Show at the coliseum in Exhibition Park. Its a great way to spend a day and over the years over twelve million dollars has made its way into con- servation projects, thanks to the Sportsmen's Show. In a brief to the Thom Commission on rent review, the 25,000 member Association says "a_ substantial rethink of current government policy is required." The key element, it says, is the eventual abolition of controls--something the government's own research has advocated. "We have vacillated long enough.
