Commodores devour Lunch Last Thursday evening at MSS triple gym, Midland Com- modore Hotel beat Penetang Dock Lunch 88-57 in Simeoe County Intermediate Men's basketball action. It was the final regular season game for both squads. Dock Lunch showed Midland Secondary School junior girls' volleyball team con- tinued its assault on a BGSSA championship last Thursday, by capturing the Zone 2 title at Midland. Coach Andy Wicksted's team had some troubles early in the preliminary round, as they split games with Park Street, winning 15- 6 and losing 15-9, and with Cannington's Surprising poise and consistent rebounding in the opening half to hold Midland to a narrow 28- 26 halftime lead. Coach Doug Andrews employed a_ platoon system, as well as several new offensive and defensive wrinkles, as he prepared his Hotelmen for this week's SCIMBL finals. Leading the way for the Commodores was ever-consistent Jeff Attwood. The = slick guard counted 14 points, and joined five other Hotel shooters in double figures. Jim Greenfield was next in line with 13 points, followed by Bill Hartman with 12, and Dean Anest, Leo McBride, and Andy Wicksted with ten each. This balanced of- fensive thrust, and the Hotelmen's vaunted man-to-man defence should take them a long way in the league playoffs. Penetang's _ leading shooters were Keith Craig and Ian Hunter with 12 each. Dock Lunch will play in the '"'B" division playoffs held this week at Barrie's Georgian College. They face King City Deemac Stingers juniors take Zone 2 Brock Collegiate, winning 15-9 and losing 15-11. In the last match of the morning round, MSS lost 15-6, 15-13 to rival St. Theresa's. This put them in third place in their pool, and set the locals against Brock in the semi-finals. Relying on middle hitting from captain Katherine Nicholls and Janet Beausoleil, as well as a strong outside game from Suzanne Bourgeois, Susan Carpenter, and Jane Shaw, MSS pulverized their opponents 15-5 and 15-zip to gain a berth in the finals. Marauders gained a measure of sweet revenge in this semi- final triumph, because Brock eliminated MSS in last year's final to go on to the GBSSA finals. In the final match of the day, Midland played STHS who had dropped Park Street in their semi, 15-11, 15-6. Jean Goodrow's Crusaders came out flying as they repelled attack after attack, and won 15-10. Once again however, led by setters Mary Chambers and Linda Ferraro, Midland picked themselves up off the floor, and rebounded for con- vincing wins of 15-6 and 15-5 to capture the Zone Championship. This Saturday Midland Secondary School junior = girls Marauders travel tc Alliston to play in the Georgian Bay Secon- dary School Association finals. So far in this highly successful season, MSS sports a 47-5 won-lost record. They are 5-1 in Co-ops lose series opener After a season of victories over Beeton, it came as a surprise to the Elmvale Co-op Midgets to lose the OMHA series opener at Beeton on Sunday, Feb. 27. The 8-3 triumph by Beeton was made possible because the positional play of the Co- ops was not disciplined enough for a_ play-off effort. The line of Paul Steele, Dave Ban- nerman, and Steve Chalmers accounted for the first goal of the game, with Steve doing the actual scoring. However, with forwards breaking three abreast rather than one forward trailing to back up the play, it was not long before the resulting 3- on-2 Beeton breaks began to wear down the Elmvale defence. Beeton jumped to a 2-1 lead in the dying minutes of the third period and persisted to gain a 4-1 lead by the end of the second. Both teams scored a pair early in the third: Chalmers again from Bannerman and Steele, and Rodger Allen from Greg Miller. With the score 6-3 and ten minutes remaining it began to look like the Elmvale boys were beginning to take command. Then, several inop- portune penalties broke the enthusiasm with which the Co-ops had become inspired. There were some high points in the game: there was an above average amount of solid body-checking, there were some exciting stops made by both Elmvale goalies, Steve Cochrane and Paul Shaban, and there were some excellent defensive efforts by the Elmvale rear guard. It should be possible for Elmvale to correct those major flaws that resulted in this loss.
