It appeared that lack of practice time Aurora team beat them might have taken the polish off the team's scoring touch. Aurora led at the end of the first period 1-0, and built it to 3-0 before Stoneleigh came back to get a couple of late second period markers to make it 3-2 going into the last 15 minutes. There were lots of penalties called, with Aurora sitting out 33 minutes, and the home team getting 23 minutes worth. Kings spotted the Indians a 1-0 lead Sunday on a first period goal by Ted Lahay, who added a pair of assists later in another fine showing. Kings scored three straight times during the middle frame to take control of the game. McReynolds scored the first two, and Dale Denis tacked on the third. Gravenhurst scored with Phil Carter getting his first of two on the night with just 1:56 left in the period. ; In the third, Kings almost let it slip away, giving up two goals in the first six and a half minutes. Carter and Kris King did the clude a_ last-second altercation between Midland's Jasor Brown and Aurora's Brad Velema. Steve Zeitel and Kevin Belcourt accounted for damage. This made it a 4-3 game for Indians. Two goals in 28 seconds salted it away for Ron Marchildon's crew. McReynold's third and Glenn Lesperance's goal at 8:32 and 9:00 made it 5-4 Kings, and Carl Cowan added the insurance goal at the 13-45 mark. According to Kings' manager, Peter Dubeau, the team is playing very well now, after stumbling Friday night at home. Apparently Kings were caught off guard in the series' opener.: "They are a better team than we figured on. They played very well Friday, and we played not too well, until the third period. I think things are back under control now." Friday, Lahay had a pair of goals and an assist to lead Indians to a 5-1 lead before Kings got untracked. After giving up a couple ' of soft goals early in the period, Kings got back to within one goal at 5-4, before giving up an empty net marker. Brian McReynolds with two and brother Blair and Peter Roi handled the Penetang scoring on Friday. Kings host game three tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Penetang Arena. Should be a good one. Royalties....John Monague set up three goals for Kings in Sunday's win, while Brian Norwood and Captain Frank Hall added a pair of assists each...Kevin Steele prevented Friday's score from being much higher...the little goalie kept Kings close at 2-1 going into the third period...Friday night at Pen Arena is a good example of Hockey Night in Canada, a real playoff atmosphere. the Midland goals Sports Views by Ron Johnson Just some views on what's been happening lately in the world of sports. Last weekend in Ontario Universities Athletic Association volleyball action, University of Toronto won the provincial volleyball crown, and it was indebted to Midland and St. Theresa's High School for the title. Paul Cox and John Quilty, both grads of 'STHS are members of the U of T team. They are now headed for beautiful downtown ' Vancouver for the Canadian championships f2 UBC. Good luck, guys! Busy time for sports fans Paul has already been named as an Kastern Canada All Star, so he has had a good year. Paul's sister Patti stars as a volleyballer at McMaster University in Hamilton. It's: unfortunate to hear that some of the children taking part in last Saturday's ice show at the Penetang Arena, had to hear laughter and derisive comments as they tried their best to do their routines. Purpose of the show is to get the kids in- volved in skating, and to have them feel they have accomplished something. If you want to see a professional ice show put out $10 and see Ice Capades. Kelly Swales arrived back in town from her experience with the Ontario Winter Games volleyball team just in time to take part tn the Zone 2 volleyball championships for St. T's. Torney took place last Thursday at MSS. Watch on Friday for Kelly's report on what it was like in Jonquiere, Quebec as a com- petitor, and as an observer. We hear it was mainly cold! Isn't it amazing what the new USFL spent to acquire the services of Herschel Walker to lend credence to the league? The question remains whether the price will make the league believable or just broke. Nonetheless, play starts this Sunday on ch. 7 Buffalo on the tube, and there's a game Monday night on Global. : This is the busiest time of year for sports fans. All the major sports schedules overlap each other. With the new football league, it's even more confusing. Baseball teams are opening their training camps, the NHL is heading for playoff time, _ bringing fan interest to a peak, pro basketball 'is at the same stage, and other international events are drawing closer. - Brian Orser is preparing for the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships to be held in Helsinki, Finland the weekend of March 10-12. We're betting he ends up neck- and-neck with Scott Hamilton of the USA for the gold medal. Penetanguishene Kings are creeping closer to their second consecutive league title. They entertain Gravenhurst tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Penetang Arena in the third game of the league finals. It looks like it's going to be a long series. Gravenhurst is proving to be a better team than they appeared to\be during the season, although they won the northern division of the league. Just proves that the playoffs are a new season. (And all those other appropriate cliches.) It looks like most ball leagues in the area will get an early start \due to this warm weather. We'd better get\crackin' out there fellows!
