et OUTDOORS: by Bryan Bertiault If a crowd is present and the subject of fishing happens to pop up, its for sure someone in the crowd, who's not a wand waving nut, will ask why most anglers carry so many rods and reels? For years I could never quite get a proper answer, in fact, at times I began to wonder myself. But, at long last, I think I have the answer. Fishing is much like golfing. Different situations call for different equipment. A bait cast rod and reel may not work well on a river bank while chasing trout but its second to none when working big hawgs on a shoreline. It would be a waste of graphite or boron sensitivity to use these materials while fishing downriggers since a fine touch is not needed. Here glass rigger sticks prove their worth. A fly rod on a muskie boat would look as out of place as a pool cue on a golfing green. Not that either wouldn't work, but the chances are slim. Each rod and reel has its own charac- teristics. Many will serve a multitude of purposes, especially if fishing outing are few during the course of a year. But, for those who seek pure enjoyment and success on the many hours put into fishing, several outfits will decorate the walls. With economics the way they are throughout the area, expense enters the picture. For those who are serious about fishing, equipment rod building may be the answer. Building your own custom rod is becoming more and more popular. It has a twofold purpose. First, and very important, it cuts down on the cost, which in turn cuts down on the silent treatment when the little woman finds out the cost of graphyte or boron rods on the market. Building your own, in some cases, may cut costs in half. Second and most important to the user, is the construction. We all have our own per- sonal preferences in rods. By building your own, these little things can be built in or purchased at the time. When it's finished you have your own personal rod, tailored to your needs and quite possibly the only one of its kind in the world. Perhaps a Fenwick, the 'in rods', brings a gleem to your eye. Why not build one? Check local sport shops. If what you're looking for cannot be purchased locally, try Angling Specialties Box 186, Guelph, Ontario, N1iH 6J9, or L. G. STHS teams active in volle Both the junior and senior girls' volleyball teams from St. Theresa's High School con- tinue to be busy these days. Last Thursday both squads travalled to Le Caron to take part in a three team tourney with Le Caron and Elmvale. Juniors defeated both squads easily, as Sue Ford and Chris Duval led the Crusaders past Le Caron, and Ford served 15 straight points against Elmvale, as STHS juniors whipped them 15-0, 15-1. Senior Crusaders also won against Le Caron and Elmvale, defeating the former 15- 12 and 15-10, and dropping the latter 15-10. 15- In conjunction with Penetanguishene's Winterama Carnival there will be an Atorn division minor hockey tournament going on all weekend at Penetang Arena. Friday night there are games scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and action continues in the first round untill noon on Saturday. Consolation and championship play continues from that point until the title games on Sunday. Consolation title game goes at 4:30 p.m. Sundy, followed by the Grand Championship Winterama hockey tournament 13. STHS has a little trouble early in these matches due to the insertion of some new faces into the line-up but overcame the problem to win handily. Both teams saw action in tournaments last weekend as the junior Crusaders went to Barrie and won the consolation in the Barrie Central Invitational tourney. STHS played in a pool with Bracebridge, Innisdale, Midland Secondary, and Barrie North where they won five of eight games and made the playoff round. There they met Barrie Central winning 15-6 and losing 11-15. There will be 14 teams from all over southern Ontario vying for the tournament championship.
