Old Boys heading back to college Over 200 Pickering Old Boys are expected to visit Newmarket with their families on Saturday, Feb. 19. The occasion for the visit is the school's annual Old _ Boys Reunion Day. Over the last few years, crowds at the event have been growing and this year returning alumni are expecting 200 according to Reunion Committee projections. While the emphasis of the day is on alumni meeting up with old school friends, there are activities galore for the wives and children of alumni. While dad plays in the distributed to hockey or basketball tournament, mom and the kids can cheer him on. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS BY TERRIS TRAVEL The Only Way To Go WANTS TO HIRE LOCALLY Mayor's views fall on deaf ears To that the mayor fired back, 'We should hire them from town and train them on the job." The mayor's one-man campaign to have Tim Toole's replacement hired locally fell on deaf ears after his colleagues voted to advertise here in town as well as in the Globe. Ehler was given permission to "piggy back" his ad with one the town is placing for a new fire chief. The commissioner of works cited the saving to public works and public safety committee budgets if both positions were advertised in the same advertisement. As for hiring a new fire chief, Mayor Roach left no doubt as to where he stands on the subject. Both he and Reeve Bev Day indicated they'd like to see Belfry get the job. However their comments also fell on deaf ears. Despite the fact Midland Mayor Al Roach feels the town should hire someone locally to replace an operator who is leaving the town's water pollution treatment plant today, to take up a position in Bermuda, council Monday night voted to ad- vertise the vacancy in both local newspapers as well as in the Globe and Mail. The mayor cited rising unem- ployment in Midland as reason enough to hire locally. "You'd get all sorts of responses," the mayor observed during heated discussion of the town's hiring practices. Commissioner of Works Percy Ehler was quick to point out, 'I'm not interested in the number of ap- plications but (their) background and experience."
