Labatt Tankard Challenge Round The Labatt Tankard Challenge Round West is béing held this weekend at the Midland Curling Club, and it's an event all local curling enthusiasts should get out and see. Play starts on Friday night with two draws, at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the double knockout event. There will be 16 of Ontario's finest rinks in the competition looking for one birth in the Provincial Championships. These 16 rinks are either runners up from the eight inner zone rounds held receintly around the province, or are invitees, based on decisions handed down by the Ontario Curling Association. With only one rink advancing to the finals, it makes the Challenge round a very cut throat competition. All curlers are under pressure as soon as they arrive at the rink, and it is not relieved until they have either been eliminated or have won the round. Because of the high calibre of curling exhibited at the Challenge round, MCC manger Bill Howard explained that it took much work to get the competition here, and that he was glad to host the event. "We have been trying to get this com- petition in town for about three years, at least that's when we first applied for it. We are extremely lucky to be hosting such a top flight at MCC this week event," said Howard. Of local interest, there are several well known people invoved in the Tankard playoffs. First of all, Russ Howard, and his rink of brother Glenn, Larry Merkley and Kent Carstairs, have already qualified for the finals for the third time. He failed last year in trying to qualify via the Challenge Round. Bob Ruston's rink from Penetanguishene is taking part in this pear s Challenge round. Members of his rink are Gilles Cing-Mars, Martin Robillard, and Denis Gignac. As well as these two rinks, there are a couple of curlers in the competition with ties to the area. Sandy Campbell, lead of the Forest City Curling Club's B rink is the son of Mrs. Bea Campbell, of First Street in Midland. Another native son returning to the area is Alex Pinchin, son of the late Jim Pinchin, a native Midlander.
