Mezzo-soprano Lois Marshall, considered by many to be the greatest singer in the last quarter century, has joined the Ontario March of Dimes as Honourary Campaign Chairperson for the 1983 Ability Fund campaign. : The volunteer position was } previously held by Tony Gabriel, former all-stor football player with the Ottawa Rough Riders and five- time Schenley Award winner. Tony Gabriel represented the Ontario March of Dimes on numerous occasions across the province for the last three years as Honourary Campaign Chairman. Over that time, he became a familiar face to thousands of physically Poe adults in Ontario. Tony officially passed overthe reins to Lois Marshall at a reception following her benefit concert for { disabled people in Toronto. last December. Starting her singing i career in 1947, Miss Marshall has gained world-wide _ recognition working with such conductors as Sir ; Thomas Beecham, Arturo Toscanini and Sir Ernest MacMillan. i "Having to deal with my own disability (polio) for 55 of my 57 years", said Miss Marshall recently, "I feel I can speak very Well for my fellows who happen also to have a handicap'. Miss Marshall's participation on behalf of the Ontario March of Dimes / will begin in January, 1983. j There are over three-quarters of a 4 million people in Ontario with some ; form of disability. The March of Dimes, originally formed tofightvolio, works with physically disabled adults i by involving them as volunteers, staff } and advisors. i Regardless of disability, disabled { people receive direct services through ; the agency. Wheelchairs, artificial limbs, electronic aids and many other items are provided on a regular basis Joins team | toassist disabled to assist with greater mobility and independence. In addition, the organization offers job training and employment op- portunities at 11 centres, operates three holiday camps for disabled men and women annually during the summer and offers a variety of other services including travelling medical clinics, sports and _ recreation programs. Working with disabled adults in communities across Ontario, the March of Dimes also helps to initiate transportation systems, organize self- help groups and make communities accessible for disabled people. These services are made possible through the generosity of public donations to the Ability Fund cam- paign, held this year from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15. Donations can be sent to Ontario March of Dimes, 90 Thorn- cliffe Park Drive, Toronto, Ontario. One of Canada's fastest rising Country and Western stars, Carol Johns, will be appearing at the 1983 Canada Farm Show. Carol's first single "Out of My Mind" was released in June and was one of the top 40 Country hits in Canada. Another recent release, "You're Stronger Than Me" is also very popular. ' Johns' first single earned her a nomination as "Newcomer of the Year' by the Academy of Country Music Entertainment. She was one of fifteen Canadian Country artists nominated for the title. A very talented musician, Johns' sound has been likened to that of Juice Newton and Linda Ronstadt. Equally comfortable with contemporary and country music she has gained wide audience appeal. Special appearances across Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia have generated a keen audience following. Johns has completed taping '"'Opry North" a_ nationally syndicated radio show sponsored by CFGM, Canada's' largest Country and Western radio station. Carol Johns and her three piece band, "Special Delivery" deliver a highly professional show. They will be performing two shows nightly Wed- nesday, Thursday and Friday evenings beginning at 6 p.m. in the West Annex. In 1983 Canada Farm Show will be one of the best exhibitions ever organized. Over 500 participants will display the latest farm equipment and supplies for every segment of agriculture. Exhibits are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Two cattle shows are also scheduled - the Canada Farm Show Invtational Holstein Sale on Wednesday, Jan. 26 and the Winter Classic Sale of the West Central Ontario Hereford Zone, scheduled for Thursday.
