aa Kings, Cents tie 5-5 Cents blow three-goal lead as Kings storm back in third period by Ron Johnson When you've got a top t e am oie si :*6: Penetanguishene Kings on the ropes, you'd better be able to finish them off. The lesson was learned 'by Midland Centennials on Sunday in Georgian Bay Jr. C action at the Penetanguishene Arena. Cents failed to hold a 5-2 lead and had to settle for 5-5 tie against the Kings. It appeared for a while in the first period that the game would turn into a real high scoring game, as Kings scored twice in 16 seconds, and _ then surrendered one to Cents only five seconds _later. Carl Cowan and Phil Cing-Mars_ scored the Kings' goals, while Doug Kirton replied for Midland. The three goals in 21 seconds would tie the NHL record for fastest three goals, set in the dark ages by Bill Mosienko 'of | Chicago. For the record.... Wayne Gretzky, Steve Podborski, Debbie Brill, Carling Bassett, Gaetan Boucher and Angella Taylor are carrying ona long tradition of sports participation in Canada. Strength durance were a way of life for the pioneers and they took to -sports enthusiastically. From our native peoples, early settlers learned snowshoeing, canoeing and baggataway, which closely resembles lacrosse. General Wolfe's soldiers brought curling to Canada in the 1760s and hockey and football were favourites by 1900. Both sports were recognized by Gover- nors General Stanley and Grey, who donated our first national trophies. Even before the turn of the century we had our first international sports hero, world rowing champion Edward Hanlan, and others were not long in following. Marathoner Tom Longboat, an Onondaga Indian, set a record at the Boston Marathon while still in his teens. Swimmers' Marilyn Bell and Cindy Nicholas, hockey players Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard, figure skater Barbara Ann Scott and_ skier Nancy Greene-Raine are just a-few of the many champions winning international acclaim for our country over the years. Shots on net were the same in the middle frome, but only Cents were able to capitalize. Midget players brought up by Cents to fill the vacancies left. by the absences of Ken Mugford, Al Whidden and Rob Greenlaw accounted for both goals. Marlon Geiseler and Owen Quilty both of the of Midland each tallied a goal to give Cents a 4-2 bulge on Kings. Cents went up by a 5-2 margin at the 1:53 point of the last frame when John Walter scored. That was all the scoring Cents were able to inuster, and it might have been enough were it not for a severe let- down a few minutes later. Kings began their comeback with a goal by John Monague at the 3:16 mark. Blair McReynolds, who has held a hot hand of late, scored less than three and en-. Instead of carrying the play to Kings as they had done most of the two earlier periods, Cents played Leaf hockey and tried to sit on their well earned but hardly safe lead. Not something you should make a habit of against the experienced and. high powered Kings. The full price for Cents relaxed play was paid when McReynolds tallied his second goal at 12:01, and tied it up for good. The rest of the game was a series of missed opportunities for both lcams, as play opened up and both Chris Lemieux in net for Midland, and Bryan Lethbridge, Kings' goalie rose to the oc- casion. Lethbridge was especially sharp throughout the game, as he stopped many good chances among the 36 pucks he blocked. His play earned him the third star of the game award. Defenceman Larry McMann had a gilt- edged opportunity to send. Cents home with two points. With about 15 seconds left, McMann had a lear cut breakaway. With no one harassing him, he managed to put his shot right into Lethbridge's pads. The tie, although a little disappointing to Cents after holding the lead, should lift the spirits of both teams. Cents because it's always hard to amange a point in Penetanguishene, and Kings, because they showed they can come back against a good Midland squad.
