os Sports Views Christmas is a time for giving. So here I go, donning my magic Merlin's hat to give needed help to worthy, and sometimes not so worthy, causes. Let's start locally, they say charity begins at home. I believe Ear] Scott and the Midland Athletics are as needy as anybody around here. I grant the A's 30 more players, so they ice 15 skaters for all their games. Surely from 40 players, one-third could make it to all the contests: Maybe freedom from injuries and a backup goaltender would make a nice touch, too. I don't know if Penetanguishene Kings need my help, but I think Ron Marchildon would like a South Division penant in the Georgian Bay Junior C League. It's yours if you can settle up with Essa. Midland Centennials get a win over each of their rival teams in their quest for the South Division flag. I can only spare one from each team, so coach Ross McConnell better use them with some discretion. For Brigg Harvey, Jeff Attwood, Rick Presse, and everyone else who coaches a basketball team in the area, I will provide one tall family with several-kids for each school zone. Four Doug Andrews of the Commodores and the Dock Lunch squad, maybe the parents can be tall too! For Arnold Burgher of the Silver Stick tourney, here's one week of trouble-free hockey and quiet understanding parents. They Christmas is Brian Orser, champion figure skater. Maybe at that level of competition, the thing that separates the winner from the next two or three skaters is luck. To you Brian, the best of luck at the Canadian championships and the worlds. Maybe honest, unbiased judges wouldn't hurt either! Here's some other sports personalities I'd like to see get Christmas wishes. For Harold Ballard, a last place finish and an empty Gardens for his Toronto Maple Loafs. For George Steinbrenner owner of the New York Yankees, another way to lose. This time the Yanks will revert to the home run, and will have the league's worst defence. To Ed Garvey and the NFL players union, I grant a never ending series of no-shows, and wishes fulfilled pay cuts in the future. Thanks a lot for taking away eight weeks of enjoyment, and replacing it with greed and watered down football. Maybe the new USFL will be enough of a gift. As a gift to Wayne Gretzky, I grant a Stanley Cup victory, but not until my Habs have finished with the trophy! Apologies to any Islander fans. But most of all, I wish for all sportsmen and sports fans, the enjoyment and _ thrills provided by all athletes in their favorite sports. May all your teams be successful and all your players champions. May the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play be with you and yours throughout the holiday season and beyond. Penetanguishene Kings have finally lost a Georgian Bay Junior C League contest. Essa 80's dropped Kings 8-2 Sunday night in Essa to halt Penetanguishene's winning streak at 12 games. " Kings' first loss since Oct. 29 came in a rough and tumble affair which saw them lose the services of Greg St. Amant for two games due to his involvement in the second fight in one play stoppage, which occurred in the second period. Dave Robillard is gone for one game from the original fight at the time. Coach Ron Marchildon was not too displeased at the loss of the streak. "We knew we had to lose sometime, and I guess it may as well come against a top team. We would feel worse having lost to a lower team.' Kings stayed even with Essa for the first period, but trailed 4-2 after two, and weren't really up for the game. Marchildon blames the less than energetic showing on the paucity of the recent games. "When you only play one game per week for over three weeks, you tend to lose continuity and have trouble carrying moytivation from one game to the next. We din't play very well, and the number of penalties really didn't have a bearing on the outcome of the game." Penetanguishene had lots of opportunities but some nights they just don't go in the net. Most chances were either wasted on wide shots or the shooters put the puck right at the goalie. John Monague and Brian McReynolds scored first period goals for the Kings, but that was "'all she wrote". Brian Lethbridge was in net for Kings, but didn't enjoy his best game. The loss ended the 12 game win streak, which reached the dozen mark Friday night in Penetanguishene against the less than hapless Haliburton Huskies. Kings won 15-1, in a game that did little to motivate the Kings for Sunday's tough encounter. Three players had hat tricks, although it's not much of a trick anymore against Huskies. The three goal men were Dave Robillard, Greg St. Amant, and Blair McReynolds. Blair's brother Brian had two goals, as did Peter Roi. Brian Norwood and John Monague scored once each. Kings play twice this week, tonight in Oro, and Sunday afternoon at 3:30 when they host Midland Centennials at Penetanguishene Arena. Royalties...Marchildon notes that his team's next winning streak only has to go 12 games to reach the end of the regular season..:That's when the counting really starts...Norwood had four assists in Friday's win, while St. Amant, Blair McReynolds and Peter Roi all had three...St. Amant will sit for both of this week's games, while 'the Rocket" oops, Dave Robillard will be in the lineup against Midland.
