127 TPT ORI ------------ Fi EE ee you can help Dear Editor: It is indeed sad that more than half the World's estimated 42 million blind brethren who can be restored to sight by cataract surgery costing $25 per patient, have to lead their lives in total» darkness for lack of this meagre amount. I have been a longtime supporter of Operation Eyesighi Universal, a fine Canadian organization which has restored sight to over 60,000 blind people, treated over 600,000 others for various eye ailments and prevented tens of thousands more from going blind last year alone through its 52 medical teams in 16 different countries. I would like to mention: 1. A $25 tax-deductible donation pays for surgery. hospitalization and special glasses for one person 2. Donors receive ID cards signed by performing surgeons, giving the name, age and address of persons restored to sight because of the donations--hence, a person-to-person program. During 40 years practice as an eye surgeon in Victoria. I have performed many, many sight restoration operations, but none has brought me more pleasure, happiness and satisfaction than those performed on my behalf on some poor blind persons in the poor countries as indicated on the ID cards I have received. 3. The O.E.U. was started in 1963 in Calgary by Art Jenkyns when he heard the plea for funds from the legendary Canadian medical missionary, Dr. Ben Gullison, who, along with his wife Evelyn, spent 40 years in Sompeta on the East coast of India, and established a 125-bed eye hospital which has restored over 150,000 blind destitutes over the years 4. Gullison and Jenkyns, both recipients of Order of Canada for their noble work. humbly attribute the start-up of the project to The Great Healer, who walked the shores of Gallilee 2,000 years ago giving sight to the blind. I have worked in Cambodian refugee camps in Thailand (through Rotary International) and have seen the immense need for 'eye work'. I urge my fellow Canadians to feel the joy of sponsoring blind destitutes for the priceless gift of sight this Christmas. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to: Operation Eyesight Universal, P.O. Cruise, M.D., Eve Surgeon Accountable to Legislature Dear Editor: The announcement yesterday that Ontario Hydro plans to postpone the construction of Units 3 and 4 at Darlington highlights the need for a full inquiry into Hydro's expansion plans, the cost over-runs and escalation at Darlington, and Hydro's methods and costs of borrowing. In the meantime, a moratorium should be placed on further construction at Darlington. Since 1979, Ontario Hydro has_ stubbornly refused to accept the Select Committee on Hydro's contention that Darlington would not be required until between 1996 and 2004 with a two per cent to three per cent increase in demand. Now . Hydro predicts that Ontario's ecomomy will not pick up until 1987 and predicts a load growth of 2.1 per cent. Last year after predicting a growth of 3.1 per cent Hydro actually experienced a growth of less than one per cent. Even granting Hydro's current contentions, the Darlington Units will be coming on stream bet- ween eight and twelve years before they are needed. That is Units A and B, which.Hydro still wants to plug into the system in 1988 89, won't be needed until 1996 at the earliest, the units coming on stream in 1992 won't be needed until at least 2004 Hydro can't have it both ways. It must be more open and honest. If Hydro is planning to shut down hydraulic and or coal fire stations to make way for the huge nuclear giants in Bruce B, Pickering B. and Darlington as they come on-stream, Hydro should say so. And Hydro should say exactly which - Units they plan to shut down and what jobs will be lost. The Minister of Energy should either set up a public inquiry or by a comprehensive reference to the Ontario Energy Board ensure that Hydro's future expansion and especially Darlington is thoroughly examined by an independent body. As well, the Minister should inform the Premier that he is now willing to have the Legislature establish a permanent Standing Committee on Energy to review these contentious issues as they arise. Hydro must be made accountable to the Legislature and to the public. Jim Foulds MPP (NDP) Port Arthur Yet another blunder? Dear Editor: Our inept Midland Town Council moves from blunder to blunder (remember that foolish and unnecessary garage sale permit?) with the latest being to eject the Huronia Craft Guild from the Civic Centre where it had been held in previous years, and after the advertising was distributed as to where the display would be held. While it is true that Budd Watson and his beautiful Gallery came to the rescue of the popular Christmas Gift Show, there is little excuse for such ham-handed regulations as our Council is capable of throwing together with a minimum of common sense and a lack of clear thinking!
