QUTDOORS with Bryan Berriault Think summer! Once again its that time of year. Christmas will soon be upon us and as usual annual shopping trips will soon be made. Somewhere in the shuffle of seasons, fishing tackle and other related warm weather gear, is packed away, out of sight and thus out of mind. A fisherman is never a man who has everything! I haven't met a fisherman yet who has everything he wants in aStnnE tackle or equipment. There's always that one piece of tackle he's looking for. It may be worth a fortune, then again, it may only be worth a few cents, something one never seems to buy. RaAaALa For those who don't want to mortgage the house, there are a few inexpensive gifts one can purchase. A Normark knife sharpener is something I wouldn't be without now that I have one. My wife says it really works and when she says so it must be so!!! A Polaroid safety flasher is small, can be used in any emergency and carried in a pocket. This signalling device could prove invaluable if lost or in trouble whether on the road or water. Just a couple of 'items to start the grey matter working, right? Now for some heavy artillery, the one that hits the pocket book. Every angler can use another rod and reel. If one wants to go all out, the rod com- position has to be graphite or boron. Per- formance of these rods is uncomparable to conventional wands. It's the material of the _ eighties. Zebco, Dgiwa, Shakespeare and of course Fenwick, all have graphite rods on the market. QAAaAA Reels are a "must" to any angler. It's often hard to decide which reel, especially if buying for someone else. Does he use ultra-light, spin-cast, bait cast or fly reel? What size reel, what line capacity, a left or right hand reel? There's a reel on the market to fit everyones needs. If it's a reel you're looking for, better check with a fishing buddy and get the user's preferances. When buying, try to buy good brand names, such as Zebco, Shakespeare, Daiwa, Mitchell and Quick just to mention a few. For a few dollars more it guarantees parts are available should an accident happen. RAAAa Buying orphan makes is like buying a throwaway lighter. When it's finished it's. finished for good. Check with the salesperson the nearest parts outlet. A reel is an investment. A good reel will last for years if properly taken care of. With ice fishing almost upon us it opens the doors to a multitude of gifts from inexpensive ice scoops to portable ice huts. Let your mind run free. Gentlemen, instead of passing on that second hand rod and reel to the wife buy her a new one. It's cheaper than a new fur coat. Go ahead, drive a salesperson crazy, ask to see the summer line of fishing equipment. In a recent column I mentioned giving a helping hand to the Ministry of Natural Resources in feeding our deer population. Congratulations to the Simcoe County Bow Hunters Association. . They donated $300 to help feed wintering whitetails in Huronia. That's a lot of bucks!!! His dedication ism Albert Marin, right, is seen receiving a plaque from Len Desjardin on behalf of Masters and Youth Bowlers in Penetanguishene. The plaque was presented Saturday in honour of Marin's dedicated hours of work in originating the Youth Bowling Council in Penetanguishene, and in the work he put into the YBC in the years from 1978 until 1982. Mr. Marin is on leave of absence due to health. appreciated! Little Lakers tie 4-4 Penetanguishene Little Lake BP Peewees tied Collingwood 4-4 on Sunday in Blue Mountain country. This tie gives the BP'ers a modest three- game unbeaten streak. What should have been a win for Penetanguishene, was turned into a tie by a rare penalty in the last two minutes of the game. Collingwood called for a measurement of one of the BP peewee's sticks and it was found to have too much curvature in the blade. During the resulting minor penalty, the home team netted the tying goal. Scoring for Little Lake BP were Don Monteith, with two, and Brad Banks and Shaun Desroches with one each. Next game for Penetanguishene Peewees is this Sunday in Meaford. Investment Certificates 12%" 2&3 year Annual Rate Min. $1,000.
